Best ways to get from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

Travelling by Road | What is the road to Vang Vieng like?

The road from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is an adventure in itself. You might know that roads are always the best way to get around places in Asia. Also, this option is one of the cheapest, but it is not always comfortable. Laos is well known for the worst roads, so expect an uncomfortable journey.

However, it is a unique experience that will show you some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, if not in the Indochina area. You will have the experience of your life travelling in a shared van with fellow travellers while the driver speeds up, trying to avoid lines without asphalt but “filled” with potholes.

If you’re susceptible to motion sickness, it’s advisable to carry appropriate medication. The roads in Laos are definitely among the worst routes in Southeast Asia. Well, we think we scared you enough, but you must know that often these are the cheapest way to get around.

Bus Options | Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

Buses are a convenient and popular choice for travelling from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. Let’s explore the different bus options, including schedules, fares, and what to expect during the journey.

VIP Tourist Bus

If you prefer comfort and convenience, the VIP Tourist bus is an excellent choice for your journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. The VIP Tourist bus typically includes a shuttle service that picks you up from your accommodation and transports you to the bus station.

From there, you’ll board a comfortable air-conditioned bus with reclining seats, providing a more pleasant journey. These buses are equipped with basic amenities like onboard toilets and sometimes even Wi-Fi, allowing you to stay connected during the trip. I don’t know how much work you can do on a bumpy road, but Toti is now a pro, so you can do to

The bus journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng usually takes around 4-5 hours, depending on the road conditions and traffic. The buses make a few stops along the way for passengers to stretch their legs, use the restroom, or grab a quick snack.

It’s advisable to bring some snacks and water for the journey, as the options available at the stops might be limited.

To book your VIP Tourist bus ticket, you can use the 12Go Asia platform mentioned earlier. They offer a variety of options with different departure times, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your schedule.

Local Bus

The local bus is similar to the VIP Tourist bus, though it will be a couple of dollars cheaper and less comfy, of course. The journey is slower and bumping.

It will also be much more of a cramped journey as they try to squeeze on as many people as possible. It is not unusual to have small plastic stools in the walkway acting as extra seats.

Lastly, be prepared for just having Southeast Asian air conditioning, aka an open window. The local bus does not usually have air conditioning, meaning it could get quite dusty inside due to the open windows.

The local bus might not be as much of a direct journey, nor as comfortable. Though, if you are looking to save money and are not worried about time and comfort this could be your best option.

Shared minivan used for onward transport in Laos, from Vang Vieng to Vientiane

Shared Minivans

We have been on minivans so many times that we have lost count. These are often the most flexible options, and you can purchase a ticket on the spot by just showing up.

However, we always suggest booking in advance to reserve the best seats. Check prices here.

Shared minivans are a faster option, accommodating 10-12 passengers—sometimes a little more. You can carry your backpack and other luggage, so it is the best option to avoid surcharges for flights.

These small vehicles cover the journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng in about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions, and also seasonality. Floods can affect the route, and so delay your trip.

The vans are generally comfortable, but they can get crowded, especially during peak travel seasons. Similar to the VIP Tourist buses, minivans also make a few stops along the way for breaks and refreshments. However, the stops might be shorter than those of the buses, so it’s essential to plan accordingly.

To book a minivan or shared van, you can use the 12Go Asia platform or inquire at local travel agencies or guesthouses in Luang Prabang.

Self-Drive Options

It is possible to rent your car or a motorbike and cover the entire route. This might be the most beautiful way to go from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng; stop at your own pace and make the trip as comfortable as you wish.

However, with more control over your departure time comes a cons. In fact, the roads are not the best, so driving in a foreign country might not be for everyone. Go down this road just if you are comfortable enough. If you are within a group this way is the best option so you can share the drive.

Remember that you need your driving licence and an international permit to drive in Laos. This precaution will cover you not only on police roadblocks but also if an accident happens and you need your travel insurance to cover it. Check HeyMondo, which covered our trip to Laos.

Renting a car in Laos costs from $55 US, and you can check here promotional prices and options.

Private Taxis

If self-drive is not for you, let a local taxi driver do the hard job. Sit back, relax and enjoy your trip through the Laos countryside. This might be the most expensive way to get from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang but it is worth any penny if you don’t want the hassle and have the budget.

We suggest always using reliable services like this one to book your private transportation. Laos is generally safe, but is better to book with a well-known tour operator.

However, it is possible to arrange your private taxi with the hotel or a local agency.

Train Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

The most convenient option to get from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is definitely by train. However, it is a new thing, thanks to a collaboration between Laos and China, in fact, you can cover the journey in just one house on a comfortable bullet train.

This was our option, and we travelled through Laos by train. It is among the most expensive ways to get around, but worth the price. We have seen many backpackers like us on the same train, and it was fantastic and comfy.

You can go from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng in just 1 hour. Train tickets from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng start from $21 US, and you can book online here. Fares vary by train type and class: ordinary K-series seats go for around $11, second-class seats on the faster C-series trains from about $16, and first-class from roughly $22, so it’s worth comparing options before you book.

The only cons of taking the train, is that the stations are quite far from the town (Luang Prabang’s station is around 12km out, roughly a 25-40 minute transfer by shared minivan or taxi), and once in VV you must take a local version of the Thai Songthaew. These are cheap and regulated, so you can grab one of 20,000 LAK.

A few practical things to know before you book: the LCR trains allow up to 20kg of luggage per passenger (plus a small carry-on), and bags go through airport-style security screening before you board, so leave aerosols, oversized liquids and knives out of your hand luggage. Tickets officially go on sale 3 days before departure via the LCR app, but in practice we’d book through 12Go Asia as early as possible, especially in high season, as seats do sell out.

You will find local buses outside the train stations to the town centre for just 15K Kips

How to get from Vang Vieng Train station into town

As said, the only thing that was annoying on our journey by train was the distance of the train station from the town centre. There we come to the rescue. Just outside the train station you can grab a red track with an open back, which resembles the Thai Songtheaw. The station itself is only around 2km from the main strip, so it’s a short hop into town either way.

Walk on the right side looking at the Station’s exit. There is a little entrance to the red bus depot, they will give you a ticket and you just have to wait when it is filled with other travellers to get in motion.

Be careful as they try to squeeze money out of you while there are fixed prices in Vang Vieng. You can get your shared trip for about 20K Lak. Remember that bargain is the key in SEA.

Domestic Flight option

Even though there is no airport in Vang Vieng, we were taught to include this option in our guide. It might not be the most convenient or cheaper, but it is still possible. Alessia often suffers from motion sickness, so it was also an option in our bucket list.

Also, you should consider that it is well known that roads connecting Vang Vieng and Vientiane are mucht better than the ones linking with Luang Prabang. Taking a flight involves a journey to Vientiane by plane and then a minivan.

The entire journey might take about 5 to 6 hours and cost about $100, if not more. If you want to take this option, check the flights from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. There are about 5 flights a day with connections served by local companies Lao Airways and Lao Skyways.

Pier at Huay Xai to take the two day boat on the Mekong River to Luang Prabang

Travelling by Boat | The Scenic Route

The last option on our guide on how to go from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is the most scenic one but less known. Not many people take this route because it is not reliable, and you can’t book in advance or online. You can book boat transport from Luang Prabang just through local agencies.

Navigating the Nam Ou River for about 6 to 8 hours, depending on the weather, you will witness the beauty of Laos. The private long-tail boats are filled with locals and might be cheaper than other solutions, depending on your bargaining skills.

The journey is long but will allow you to avoid the infamous roads. However, the breathtaking views of limestone cliffs, lush forests, and remote riverside villages make it a memorable and scenic adventure.

During the boat journey, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the daily life of local communities along the riverbanks, observe fishermen at work, and appreciate the untouched landscapes of Laos.

Things to know before starting your journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

We prepared our Laos Itinerary in every detail, trying to squeeze as much time as possible within our tourist visa. We visited three of the best places: Luang Prabang, Vientiane and, of course, Vang Vieng.

Plus, we had a memorable two-day trip on the Mekong River. This experience has given us quite a lot of tips on how to organise your journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng.

Duration of the Journey

The route from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng might be very tiring, especially if you go by road. The duration of the journey might vary depending on some factors: seasonality, road traffic, time of the day, and, of course, vehicle.

You can expect it to take:

  • About 6 hours by shared minivans
  • 4 to 5 hours by VIP Bus and Taxi
  • 1 hour by train

Cost of the Journey

Also, costs vary from $6 US to $100. Taking the local bus might be long but cheaper and perfect for backpackers on a tight budget.

We suggest squeezing a little more for the journey and taking a train, which is, in some ways, a midway between flights and long journeys and costs only about $21 US.

It is a cost-effective way, and we evaluated this on a long trip to Laos. Laos is one of the cheapest countries in Asia, so planning in advance might make you save some bucks on accommodation that you can pull on transportation.

Safety Tips

Laos is generally a safe country, and we discuss this aspect in every guide about it. However, when on the move, it is safe to take some precautions for a smooth and secure journey.

Carry with you motion sickness pills. We bought ours in Thailand at a 7/Eleven counter for just 5 Baht. Before your trip to Asia make sure that the travel insurance covers your journey.

This might sound stupid, but things like losing the connection to the flight, the backpack or medical expenses might ruin your trip. Check Safety Wing, which covers Digital Nomads and backpackers very well. Also, consider reading our guide to HeyMondo, a valuable partner for our short trips.

Best time to visit Laos

The best time to visit the country is during the dry season, which is also the most crowded one. However, you must consider that Laos is one of the least touristy in the region (so when saying crowded it’s not like Phuket in Thailand). We say that the high season is the best because travelling in the wet season might affect your trip a lot.

The mighty Mekong river is in full swing, and floods and roads are completely blocked, making a connection between Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng by car or van impossible.

From November to February, temperatures are milder, making it an excellent time for outdoor activities and exploring the charming towns of Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng.

Still unsure about visiting Laos?

Our first approach to Laos was through the mighty Mekong River. So, we witnessed the raw beauty of its landscape. As we spend quiet a lot in the country we were attracted by the hype. Read our review of Pros and Cons of visiting Laos.

Our personal experience on the route

We explored Laos in the best way possible, starting at the Thai border and navigating the Mekong River for two wonderful days on a local shared boat.

Once in Luang Prabang, we decided to continue our trip on the newest bullet train. That was a wise choice as the train journey is shorter and comfy. Also, price-wise, it is just a little bit more pricey compared to shared minivans.

We enjoyed our ride, as the train has almost European standards. We suggest booking the cheapest ticket as it is pretty much the same for all the classes. The difference with the first class is the meal offered, but within one hour you can take your own snacks like us.

We booked in person at the station because, at the time of our visit, the website was down for maintenance. You can book your tickets three days in advance and choose your seat. If you book in person, remember your passport. Or with no hassles book online here.

The train stations are basic, with well-maintained toilets, but there are no outlets so we couldn’t work while waiting for the train. We suggest staying at the train station at least 1 hour before departure to pass the controls, airport style.
