Is Vang Vieng Worth Visiting in 2026? Honest Verdict & Guide
Our honest 2026 verdict on Vang Vieng: what’s changed since the party-town days, the LCR train from Luang Prabang and Vientiane, which Blue Lagoon to actually visit, and how many days it deserves.
Is Vang Vieng worth visiting in 2026? We can say yes with confidence, because we were there — not for a two-night box-tick, but as part of a month we spent slow-travelling across Laos, including days on the Mekong slow boat and long countryside stretches by scooter. We ended up staying in Vang Vieng longer than we’d planned, which tells you most of what you need to know.
We’d both heard the old stories before we arrived — the unregulated river-tubing scene, the bar buckets, the body count that eventually forced the Lao government to step in. That town is not what we found.
We rode out to the karsts, into the caves and across the lagoons, and what we witnessed was a place that has quietly rebuilt itself around the outdoors: limestone cliffs, blue-water lagoons, kayaking, caving, and some of the cheapest hot-air ballooning we’ve come across anywhere in the world.
We’ll be honest: we went in braced for a hangover of a town and came out surprised. The crowds we’d read about simply weren’t there in the same way. Fewer bodies on the river and quieter bars made the natural side of Vang Vieng — the part that was always the real draw — far easier to enjoy than we expected.
Tubing hasn’t vanished, and we did it ourselves, but it’s no longer the reason to come. Kayaking, caving, riding out to the lagoons and climbing up for sunset are what filled our days, and they’re why we’d tell you to add Vang Vieng to a two-week Laos itinerary rather than skip it as a one-night stopover.
So here’s our honest take, upfront: if you’re a nature lover, an adventure traveller or a budget backpacker, go — we can confidently say it delivers. If you’re chasing pristine cultural heritage, put that time into Luang Prabang instead. The comparison box below breaks down exactly who each town suits.

How to get to Vang Vieng in 2026 (the LCR train changed everything)
The Laos-China Railway (LCR) is the reason Vang Vieng works so well as a stopover now. High-speed EMU trains cover the roughly 130km from Luang Prabang in 50–55 minutes, with second-class fares around $12 and first-class up to $18. Coming up from the capital, Vientiane to Vang Vieng runs about 1 hour 25 minutes. Full step-by-step booking advice is in our Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng guide.
One practical note the ticket price doesn’t tell you: the train station sits outside town, so budget for a short tuk-tuk into the centre on arrival. Book at least a few days ahead in high season — seats on the popular midday departures sell out. Check here the tickets now.

Exploring Vang Vieng’s Top Landmarks
Vang Vieng has a rich history and cultural heritage that extends beyond its reputation for tubing, partying, and past drug use. While these activities may have once been prevalent, they do not fully represent the city’s essence.
Away from the hustle and bustle of tourist attractions, Vang Vieng offers a glimpse into its ancient past through various landmarks often overlooked. Among these hidden gems is the Wat Si Sou Mang temple, renowned for its intricate architecture and religious artefacts.
By exploring these historical sites, you can gain a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural evolution and its significance in Laos.

Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere
We extended our stay in Vang Vieng after a few days not solely because of the thrilling adventures but primarily because of its newfound tranquillity.
Contrary to its past reputation as Laos’s party capital, Vang Vieng has transformed and now offers a peaceful ambience. Although a few bars along the main roads maintain a pleasant atmosphere, the town no longer resonates with the same energy.
Our extended stay was motivated by the opportunity to catch up on work, facilitated by the town’s fast internet connection. The slow pace and serene atmosphere provided the perfect respite after our extended journey along the Mekong River.
Vang Vieng became our sanctuary for relaxation, where we indulged in Lao Spa treatments and spent leisurely afternoons admiring the landscape while sipping refreshing drinks.
Tubing and Other Adventures in Vang Vieng
Tubing Adventures: A Must-Try Experience
In the past, tubing in Vang Vieng was a popular, albeit dangerous, tourist activity. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the town was known as a party destination, and many came primarily to engage in tubing, which involved floating down the rapids of the Nam Song River on inner tubes.
Bars along the banks offered drinks and drugs. However, after several tragic incidents, the local authorities reduced the frequency and profitability of tubing due to safety concerns.
The inner tube rental process is still available, but it is now regulated and generally considered less dangerous. Despite these improvements, there have been instances where people have faced unfortunate experiences.
Some, in fact, have reported that upon renting an inner tube, their passport is taken as collateral and is supposed to be returned in perfect condition.
However, there have been cases where the inner tube gets punctured, leaving people stranded and facing hefty penalties to retrieve their passports.
We always suggest booking in advance through trusted companies like this one. Booking through Get Your Guide ensures that they have insurance and a licence to carry out the activity. CHECK AVAILABILITY.

Have fun and enjoy Vang Vieng nightlife
Although Vang Vieng has lost its former reputation as the ultimate party destination, exploring the bar scene around the city centre can still be an enjoyable pastime.
Several parts of the city centre feature lively bars, karaoke places, and pool tables, providing a vibrant atmosphere and plenty of entertainment options.
When we arrived in Vang Vieng, we noticed that several bars and restaurants on the central backpacker’s road showed episodes of Friends all day long. We love friends, so we spent our dinner watching the series before heading to the full moon for a drink or two with fellow travellers. Even though drugs are illegal in Laos, we have seen many kiosks selling them freely, so be aware of that.

Hot air balloon in Vang Vieng
In Vang Vieng, hot-air ballooning is gaining popularity as a unique and memorable activity. Just outside the town, you can embark on a breathtaking journey into the sky at sunrise or sunset. It is a fantastic experience that will leave a lasting memory of your trip to Laos.
Several agencies around the town offer hot-air balloon packages, with prices starting from $90. Flights typically last between 30 minutes to 2 hours, providing ample time to enjoy the stunning countryside views from above.
Exploring beyond the beaten path
Exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations is our passion. One of the primary reasons we extended our stay in Vang Vieng beyond our initial plan was the breathtaking natural beauty surrounding the city.
While in the past, Vang Vieng was predominantly popular among youngsters seeking extreme activities, today, it has transformed into a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
If you feel comfortable driving a bike on your own, check out Motorbike rental Phout, where we rented our scooter (4.7 Stars with 30 reviews on Google).
Despite the steep price, we managed to negotiate a daily rate of $7. Venture off the beaten path and immerse yourself in the breathtaking countryside. We embarked on our hikes, discovering enchanting waterfalls and serene lagoons along the way. In between, we stopped at quaint villages and marvelled at the sight of narrow streams flowing by.
Be prepared for uneven and dusty roads, as our clothes were covered in red dust after a day of exploration. Additionally, be aware that you may encounter sketchy bridges with no alternative routes available.

Vang Vieng is a paradise for photographers
Vang Vieng’s breathtaking scenery was one of the major attractions that drew us there. The freedom to explore the pristine landscapes of limestone rocks nestled amidst the vibrant orange Laos countryside is a paradise for any avid photographer and traveller.
As our journey took us through Vang Vieng, we became one with the landscape. The desolate terrain transformed into a fantastic playground for capturing moments with our cameras, becoming an integral part of our experience.
Many of Vang Vieng’s most iconic photos feature the landscape as a backdrop. However, if you want to elevate your photography, consider seeing the region from above in a hot air balloon. We took advantage of the one at our hostel, as there are limited rooftops available. It was a magical experience, with the mountains in the foreground and the sky and lights changing as the sunset.
Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you, even if it’s just your phone. With a little creativity, you can capture the beauty of Vang Vieng and create stunning photographs.

Things to know before visiting Vang Vieng
Best time to visit Vang Vieng
To maximise your trip, it’s crucial to plan around the best time to visit Vang Vieng and Laos in general. Refer to this guide to decide when to embark on your journey to Laos. Understanding the seasons, particularly the rainy season, is essential. The dry season is the ideal time to witness the region’s natural beauty and engage in adventure.
The best period of the year extends from November to April. The dry season brings pleasant weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Additionally, Vang Vieng is not overly crowded during this time, ensuring a more serene experience.
Packing essentials for Vang Vieng
When planning your trip to Vang Vieng, consider these essential items:
👗 Lightweight, Breathable Clothing: Pack clothing suitable for a tropical climate, as the dust in the area may stain your clothes.
🧴 Sun Protection: Vang Vieng lacks sea influence and breeze, so remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the intense sun.
🦟 Insect Repellent: Since there are no convenience stores in Vang Vieng, bring insect repellent from home or Thailand, especially if you plan to explore the outdoors.
👟 Sturdy Footwear: Choose comfortable walking shoes or sandals for the diverse terrain and hiking shoes if you want to engage in adventurous activities.
Laos currency
The Lao kip (LAK) is the official currency of Laos and is extensively used within the country’s borders. However, exchanging Laotian currency after our trip proved challenging.
Despite carrying the notes with us throughout our travels, it wasn’t until we reached Vietnam that we successfully exchanged them. Unfortunately, the local currency has limited demand in the financial market.
You can exchange money almost anywhere, but be wary of unofficial exchange bureaus, as they may give you counterfeit or expired notes. We always recommend carrying multiple cards (VISA and Mastercards) to withdraw cash from ATMs or pay contactless.

Laos Travel Insurance | Stay safe in Vang Vieng
Travelling to Laos is generally considered safe. During our month-long trip, which involved exploring the Mekong River and traversing dirt roads in the countryside by motorbike, we encountered no issues.
We always recommend having travel insurance. No matter where you go, you never know what can happen. In the event of unexpected circumstances, having insurance coverage provides peace of mind and access to expert support. We consistently rely on HeyMondo and Safety Wings for our travel insurance needs.
Budget to visit Vang Vieng
During our extensive journey through Laos, Vang Vieng stood out as one of the most budget-friendly destinations we encountered in Asia. Laos, as a whole, is an excellent choice for budget travellers, accommodating backpackers like us on a tight budget travelling through Southeast Asia and seasoned explorers seeking your next adventure.
In terms of accommodation, Vang Vieng offers a wide range of options. While some places were still closed due to Covid or undergoing renovations, we were delighted to find numerous affordable accommodations. Outside the city centre, you can find excellent resorts at exceptionally low prices.
Guest houses and hotels typically cost around $12 USD per day, while dorm beds in hostels can be as low as $5 to $6 per night, making Vang Vieng accessible to travellers of all budgets. Food and daily necessities are also very affordable, with meals ranging from $1 to $3.
Getting around costs little too. Scooter rental runs 120,000–180,000 LAK (roughly $5.50–$8) for 12 hours, and it’s the best way to reach the lagoons and viewpoints yourself. Add the toll bridge fee if you’re crossing to Lagoon 1 — 4,000 LAK on foot, 10,000 LAK by tuk-tuk.
Should I visit Vang Vieng? Our final considerations
We really enjoyed Vang Vieng, a small town in the middle of nowhere that we liked more than Vientiane, the capital. You might be interested in our perspective on Vientiane.
Although Vang Vieng has lost its appeal to partygoers, it may be experiencing a new era of slow travel and less impactful tourism. We hope this is the case, as its natural beauty is perfect for every type of traveller seeking adventure and authentic experiences beyond backpacking overseas.
