Is Vientiane Worth Visiting? A Guide to the Pros and Cons of Exploring the Capital
Is Vientiane worth visiting? Yes, with a caveat: 2-3 days is the sweet spot. Here are our honest pros and cons, from the riverside sunset and night market to the city’s quieter, slower side.
Is Vientiane worth visiting? Absolutely yes! Like every other place in Laos, the capital city is a unique blend of ancient Asian and modern French colonial styles. During our own five-day stay we got a little bored in the final two days, but we still wouldn’t skip Vientiane, especially for the sunset walk along the riverside promenade facing Thailand and the buzzing night market.
Located on the banks of the Mekong River, Vientiane offers a captivating experience that makes it worth adding to your travel list, especially if you’re already planning our Laos 2 weeks itinerary or wondering if Laos is worth visiting overall.
There isn’t much happening in the city today, but we think it has the potential to become one of Asia’s great capitals in the future.
In this guide, we’ll provide you with some essential information about the capital city of Laos that we wish we had known before our trip. Let’s explore some reasons why Vientiane is a must-visit destination in one of the most underrated countries in Asia.

10 Reasons why is Vientiane worth visiting

Vientiane’s Iconic Architectural Masterpieces: A Celebration of Splendor
Vientiane is a city renowned for its stunning architectural wonders, each with a unique tale to tell. Among them is the Patuxai, also known as the Laotian version of the Arc de Triomphe, featuring an intricate design that’s a feast for the eyes.
If you climb up to its pinnacle, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the cityscape. Another must-visit landmark is That Dam, a black stupa steeped in mystical legend, said to offer protection against a mythical serpent.
Wat Si Muang is a temple where locals come to seek blessings and offer prayers for good fortune. And finally, the Pha That Luang, a revered symbol of Laos’ deep spiritual roots is an iconic attraction with its golden splendour and gilded spires.
To explore Vientiane, we recommend you check out a city tour with a local guide for just $50. After that, you can visit these iconic landmarks that make Vientiane worth visiting.

Patuxai – The Laotian version of the Arc de Triomphe
The Patuxai is Vientiane’s answer to the Arc de Triomphe: a monument to Laos’ struggle for independence, adorned with intricate carvings that reward a climb to its observation deck.
While we were unable to ascend the Patuxai during our visit, we captured stunning aerial footage using a drone, providing a unique perspective of this architectural marvel and the surrounding cityscape. Check here if it is reopened.

Pha That Luang | The Buddhist golden stupa
The iconic Pha That Luang, or the Great Stupa, represents Laos’ spiritual pride and national identity. Its grandeur and intricate design make it an unforgettable landmark amidst the numerous monuments and Buddhist sites we’ve encountered.
This sacred pilgrimage site is believed to house relics of the Buddha. We set aside a few hours to explore the golden structure and soak up the serene atmosphere; a timeless symbol of Laos’ rich heritage.

Wat Si Saket | The oldest Buddhist temple in Vientiane
Among the attractions that make Vientiane a worthwhile destination is Wat Si Saket, the city’s most ancient Buddhist temple. Its distinctive architectural style, characterised by cloister walls adorned with countless Buddha images, offers a tranquil setting for reflection and discovery.
As we wandered the temple grounds, a sense of reverence and tranquillity settled in, making it a peaceful spot for reflection and discovery.
That Dam – The black stupa with an intriguing legend
In the heart of Vientiane lies That Dam, a mesmerising black stupa shrouded in legend and mystery. Local folklore weaves a tale of an ancient time when a seven-headed dragon resided within the stupa, serving as a vigilant protector against enemy invasions.
Today, That Dam stands as a testament to Vientiane’s resilience and the city’s storied past.

History and Culture of Vientiane
Vientiane offers a captivating blend of ancient history and modern development. While the city is transforming with the rise of skyscrapers, it still retains a rich cultural heritage that can be witnessed at every turn.
Vientiane’s history, from the ancient Khmer Empire to French colonial rule, shaped its cultural landscape, visible today in landmarks like Pha That Luang and Wat Si Saket, already covered above.
Despite being a relatively young nation, Laos often draws comparisons to Thailand’s past. The saying “It was Thailand about 20 years ago” rings true, as Vientiane shares similarities with Koh Lanta, which is less developed than nearby tourist destinations like Krabi or Phuket.
Explore Vientiane’s markets
We love local markets, as they capture the essence of a place and transform the atmosphere based on the country we are in. Similar to other Asian markets, Vientiane’s markets exude a vibrant energy. Talat Sao is the place to go for fresh produce, handicrafts, textiles, and traditional Lao goods. This traditional bazaar offers an array of incredible products.
Remember to bargain; it is a local custom, and you’ll be pleased with the lower prices. In the evening, from 6 pm onwards, head to the promenade for the Night Market, a long stretch of stalls selling food, clothes, and electronics.
Exercise caution, as the market can become crowded, which may attract pickpockets. While we did not encounter any issues, we heard about travellers who had been targeted, so it’s worth being aware.
We found the markets one of the most essential experiences in Laos, and a big part of why we think Vientiane is worth visiting for at least a couple of days.

Ideal for day trips out of the city
We highly recommend dedicating at least three days to exploring Vientiane. If time permits, consider renting a scooter to venture beyond the city. Vientiane is ideally located, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
For a leisurely excursion within the city, we suggest visiting Buddha Park, also known as Xieng Khuan. This remarkable sculpture park features intricate Buddhist and Hindu statues, creating an enchanting and spiritual atmosphere. The Mekong River creates a fantastic atmosphere
The Mekong River is at the heart of Vientiane’s charm. The riverbank bustles with local life, and the sunsets over the water were, for us, more memorable than any temple.
During our backpacking trip in Laos, a boat ride along the river gave us a quiet glimpse into local life.
We took the slow boat along the Mekong River to reach Luang Prabang. It was one of the most amazing experiences ever. Read our guide here!
Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan)
Many frequently overlook this exceptional “Themed Park.” Xieng Khuan is a sculpture park featuring intricate Buddha statues and captivating mazes. The park offers a series of scenes that illustrate the underlying principles of Buddhism and Hinduism.
It is an ideal destination for travellers eager to gain a deeper understanding of the country they are visiting. Venturing through the intricate pathways of the park transports you into a realm of spiritual wonder and artistic expression. CHECK THE TICKETS BEFORE YOU GO.

Vientiane Riverside Promenade
This is our top pick for where to stay: the riverside comes alive at night with strolling locals, food stalls, and views of Thailand across the water. It’s where we watched our favourite sunset in the city before heading into the night market.
Vientiane is worth visiting for savouring Lao cuisine
We loved diving into the city’s culinary scene: a steaming bowl of Khao Piak Sen, a beloved Lao noodle soup.
Or Lam, a traditional Lao stew, tantalised our palate, and we raised more than one glass of Beer Lao, the national beer. It’s a simple lager, similar to what you’d find in Europe or the US, but perfect after a day of sightseeing.
To dive into the flavour of Laos, we suggest going on a food tour with a local guide and participating in a Laotian cooking class with a local chef! These two activities are the best to get into the skin of the country.
Vientiane is safe
When considering the reasons to visit Vientiane, Laos’ safety should be noted. We have never felt unsafe, even when without internet in the middle of nowhere. Locals are friendly, though some may seem sketchy. Many Laotians are proud of their country and want to ensure you have a great experience. This is another reason Vientiane is worth visiting for solo travellers and couples alike.
For peace of mind, purchase travel insurance for Laos. This insurance can be contacted at any time and will assist you in case of issues. You can drive a motorbike with ease and get special assistance if needed. CHECK THE TRAVEL INSURANCE WE SUGGEST.

Unique experiences in Vientiane
While spending a significant amount of time in Vientiane might not be advisable, there are still opportunities to venture off the beaten path. Vientiane presents one-of-a-kind experiences that will leave a lasting impression during your Asian travels.
Embark on a sustainable journey by cycling along the Mekong River, allowing the refreshing breeze to caress your skin as you immerse yourself in the picturesque scenery.
Among the unique experiences Laos has to offer is a traditional massage technique. Locals may refer to it as “Lao Massage,” but it closely resembles a traditional Thai Massage. If you enjoy Thai massages, you’ll find a similar experience here.
However, the Baci Ceremony stands out as one of the most profound experiences in Vientiane. This traditional Lao ceremony of blessings envelops you in the warmth of Lao hospitality.

Laos currency
During our trip, we faced difficulties while changing Lao money. We had to carry the notes with us everywhere we went, and only when we arrived in Vietnam could we exchange them. The Lao Kip (LAK) is the official currency of Laos and is widely used throughout the country. While some businesses accept US Dollars, it’s not as common as in Cambodia.
You can exchange money in many places, but it’s important to be cautious as some places might give you forged notes or notes that are no longer valid. We recommend carrying multiple cards, such as VISA and Mastercards, so that you can withdraw cash from ATMs or pay contactless.
Budget to visit Vientiane
Vientiane’s affordability is a delight for travellers. The city offers something for everyone, making it a perfect destination for budget-conscious backpackers and seasoned explorers alike.
Compared to smaller towns or remote locations, you might have to search a bit harder to find reasonably priced places to eat or a good cup of coffee or tea in Vientiane. However, accommodation options are plentiful and affordable, ranging from fine resorts to guest houses with private rooms and bathrooms.
For a comfortable stay, we budgeted around $50 per day for two people, which translates to $25 per person, including accommodation, food, breakfast, attractions, and transportation. We were pleased to find that we were able to stay within our budget throughout our trip.

Tips to stay on a budget in Vientiane
Local Cuisine: Save money while exploring the flavours of Laos. Vientiane is renowned for its street food stalls and local restaurants, offering delicious and affordable meals. Indulge in Lao specialities such as sticky rice, noodle dishes, and freshly made fruit shakes.
Transportation: Getting around Vientiane can be budget-minded, too. Pass on pricey tuk-tuks and consider using local buses or inquiring about your accommodation. Renting a bicycle is an excellent option for getting around the city at your own pace and is a cost-effective way to explore. Check the price for a bike rental in Vientiane.
Stay safe in Vientiane
Beyond the capital, we explored the country’s countryside on the majestic Mekong River and rode motorbikes on dirt roads without a single hiccup.
We always travel with insurance, and for Laos specifically we rely on HeyMondo and Safety Wing for peace of mind and expert support if anything goes wrong.
Vientiane isn’t easy to navigate
Finding public transportation was one of the biggest challenges we encountered in Vientiane. The absence of public buses or alternative transportation options is unexpected for a capital city. This deficiency, unfortunately, creates an opportunity for local drivers to exploit tourists.
To navigate Vientiane, we recommend two options: renting a bicycle or joining a guided tour. Consider this tour for a comprehensive overview of Vientiane’s key attractions. (Check a tour with a guide + Central Market all day).
Laos Sim Card
When arriving in a foreign country, establishing connections and feeling safe can be daunting. To address this issue, we analysed our expense spreadsheet and discovered that purchasing a SIM card, particularly upon arrival at the airport, proved to be cost-effective. Rather than taking a taxi from the airport, we were able to save money by ordering one online.
For those seeking to stay connected while travelling, we recommend exploring e-sim options. E-sims are simple to use and can be activated before your trip, ensuring you remain connected throughout your journey. This option offers 3G and 4G, delivering a QR code to your email and activating it online without you having to pick up the card.
Tip: To connect multiple devices, you can either tether your connection from your smartphone or invest in a portable 4G Wi-Fi device with unlimited internet access. Check out this Portable Wi-Fi!
