The best sunset on the beach

Bali sunsets are just another level! Our daily routine was well-established: upon finishing our daily tasks, we would consistently make our way to the beach. A sunset stroll along Canggu Beach was an absolute must.

In our opinion, Bali boasts the most stunning sunsets. From 5 pm onwards, the beach would begin to fill with people eagerly anticipating the most enchanting moment of the day.

Head down to Batu Bolong, grab a seat on the bin bags by the Sand Bar, and savour a refreshing coconut. The cost is incredibly reasonable at just 30K IDR for an entire coconut, making it an exceptional value proposition as you witness the breathtaking sunset. 5 reasons why not visit Canggu

The traffic in Canggu is horrible

Living in Canggu for over two months had its challenges, and one of my biggest concerns was the chaotic traffic. Both locals and tourists lacked driving courtesy, making the streets quite hazardous.

In addition, getting stuck under the scorching sun during rush hour was an unpleasant experience. However, over time, I learned an unexpected skill – navigating a moped on the pedestrian path- a valuable lesson in adapting to unique circumstances.

Canggu is too crowded

While Canggu’s popularity has brought recognition, it has also brought some inconveniences. Overcrowding has become a pressing issue, as Canggu is no longer the exclusive paradise for digital nomads that many idealized.

The influx of tourists in recent years has affected the ambience, making it slightly less enjoyable. Moreover, the surge in popularity led to escalating prices, making it challenging to find amazing villas and often requiring queuing at restaurants, with the staff struggling to meet the overwhelming demand.

Canggu is expensive

Contrary to popular belief, Bali and Canggu are not as budget-friendly as you might think. While they used to be more affordable and less expensive than Western countries like Europe, the USA, and Australia, Bali has become significantly more costly.

It is still relatively cheaper than Western nations but more expensive than Thailand. Additionally, you should factor in the cost of a visa to enter Bali. The visa fee is approximately $1 USD per day.

The beaches in Canggu aren’t great for swimming

Before spending two months in Bali, we wish someone had forewarned us about a few things. The beaches, for instance, are not particularly great. Even if you find a decent beach, you’ll either have to work hard to get down the cliffs or pay at least $1 for admission.

If you’re going to Canggu specifically for the beaches, you should reconsider. Instead, take a ferry to Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands for a more relaxed atmosphere and stunning beaches.

Lack of Balinese culture

Due to its popularity as a tourist destination, Canggu has become increasingly Westernized. Many restaurants cater to travellers and adjust their offerings to meet their demands.

This shift has prompted many Balinese locals to relocate in search of more affordable housing, commuting to Canggu only for work. This migration is also a contributing factor to the widespread traffic congestion.

If you want to immerse yourself in Balinese culture, you should consider staying in Ubud, Siedeman, or further north in Munduk. These areas offer a more authentic experience and are less influenced by Western tourism.

What is the best time to visit Bali?

For an ideal Bali experience, aim to visit during the dry season, spanning from April to September. The dry and sunny weather conditions make it the perfect time to explore the island’s stunning beaches, magnificent temples, and captivating natural attractions. Peak season falls in July and August, so anticipate higher costs and larger crowds.

If you’re seeking a more budget-friendly option, consider travelling during the shoulder seasons from March to June or September to November. The weather during these periods remains pleasant, with moderate temperatures that won’t hinder your daily activities, unlike the hot and dry season.

Moreover, this is an excellent time to visit as there are fewer tourists, making it easier to soak in the island’s charm.

During our two-month stay in Bali from February to April, we encountered minimal rainfall. Despite the shoulder season, the manageable raindrops didn’t deter us from enjoying the island’s abundant activities and attractions.

The shoulder season in Bali offers delightful weather, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the island’s beauty without the distraction of extreme temperatures.

The famous Canggu shortcut, a scenic route passing through rice fields, provides a picturesque journey between Berawa and popular cafes. Among the various modes of transportation, cycling is the fastest and most prevalent in Canggu.

Driving a scooter in Koh Chang Thailand

Rent a scooter in Canggu

Scooters are a popular mode of transportation in Canggu despite our efforts to find eco-friendly alternatives. However, driving a scooter in Canggu requires certain skills, so only rent one if you’re experienced and completely comfortable on a moped.

The monthly rental fee for a basic scooter ranges from IDR 50K to IDR 100K, reflecting Canggu’s increasing cost of living. If you’re renting for a shorter duration, such as a day or a week, expect to pay between IDR 80K to IDR 150K per day.

We personally rented a Vario 150cc and had a fantastic experience. Despite riding for 2 hours in heavy rain to reach Monduk, the scooter performed admirably.

Go Jek and Grab

In Canggu, the absence of Uber has led to the rise of alternative transportation options such as Go Jek and Grab. These two popular modes of transportation cater to different needs. Go Jek is reliable for moped taxis, while Grab is ideal for long-range transportation.

If you’re staying in Batu Bolong, you won’t necessarily need a scooter. Instead, you can conveniently call a Gojek or Grab on their mobile app whenever you need transportation. These services provide passenger helmets, although you may need to request one if it’s not offered initially. JOIN GO JEK OR CHECK OUT GRAB.
