What is a workation? | Workcation Meaning

The term “workation” may be new, but it is a concept that is becoming increasingly relevant in our daily lives. To “workation” means to travel methodically to different locations worldwide while working along the way. It is often spelled as “workcation,” which is a combination of “work” and “vacation.” The ideal way to workation is to stay in one location long enough to experience the local culture and complete a specific work project.

Managing work is one of the biggest challenges in our daily lives, especially in the difficulties post pandemic. Companies worldwide are calling for a change, which has led to a new meaning of work and leisure. They are introducing new components to the average workweek, and workation has emerged as a literal meaning of working and vacationing.

Changing your location could be beneficial if you’ve been working from home for the past few months. A change of scenery can significantly impact your attitude towards work and boost your motivation. Workation is a novel vacation concept that combines business and pleasure. You can escape your home office routine for a few days to reset your perspective.

Working during vacation (‘workcation’) is becoming popular

The term “workation” is a combination of the words “work” and “vacation”, but it’s not just about taking a break from work. This new concept involves working remotely while immersing yourself in the local community, traditions, and lifestyle.

You can work for your regular employer or freelance while enjoying the local life and culture. After work hours, you can relax and unwind while enjoying tapas and beer in Barcelona or admiring the Sagrada Família. You can also engage with locals in Gran Canaria or experience the nightlife in Budapest. Opting for a workation can increase your productivity while being cost-effective and promoting mental well-being.

Recent studies have shown a global increase in demand for workations with requests for an extra couple of weeks. Countries such as the US, China, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands have recorded an increase in worckation requests.

What is the cost?

Many people are attracted to a cost-effective lifestyle, which allows them to leave their expensive city accommodations in places like London, Berlin, and Paris and move to exotic and less costly locations. Digital Nomads have been relocating to countries such as the Canary Islands, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

The primary reason for this migration is the more favourable weather conditions and the cost-effective lifestyle. The lower costs offer the opportunity for larger houses, more activities, and more time spent outdoors.

For instance, a loft in Lisbon with beautiful features and an incredible view can cost £700, less expensive than a studio flat in London that costs around £1,000 for 35 m². The cost-effective lifestyle is determined by the prices of rent and local products required to cook, shop, and experience the new place.

For example, a meal for one person in London can cost around £50, while a nice restaurant for two in Lisbon can be afforded for the same price. Additionally, staying for a more extended period can make life more affordable, from rent to knowing where to buy essentials.

Get Insurance before your trip

Regarding costs, it’s important to remember that you will need travel insurance on top of your regular expenses. Though it may cost extra before your trip, it can save you a lot of money in case of an emergency or unexpected event.

Most insurance providers now offer policies that also cover COVID-19-related expenses. This is absolutely necessary, and we highly recommend looking into it while planning your trip.

Additionally, travel insurance can cover the costs of renting a car that breaks down, loss of luggage, theft, and other unforeseen events. To learn more about how to save money on travel insurance for your next workcation in Europe, check out our comprehensive guide.

Best co-working spaces in Europe

Workation is separate from being a digital nomad but falls within the same category as remote work. A Workationary is someone who enjoys their job but wants the freedom to experience a variety of lifestyles while continuing their regular job.

It’s important to note that while working remotely, you still have to be available to your employer during work hours, even if you are located elsewhere. However, you can take breaks in beautiful locations like the beach, on a boat, or at a bar.

Workation is a way for people to work from home while being in a different country. On the other hand, digital nomads take advantage of the flexibility that remote working offers and travel to various destinations for business, using only their laptops and high-speed Wi-Fi.

If you’re looking for a unique and affordable escape in Italy, it’s worth considering some of the lesser-known cities. These hidden gems offer an authentic Italian experience at a lower cost than the major tourist hotspots. One of these hidden gems is Bari, located in the South-East region of Puglia.

Bari is a big city with much to offer, making it an excellent choice for remote workers. Its location on the seaside makes it an ideal destination for the spring and summer months. Bari’s most significant selling point is its authenticity, rich gastronomy and affordable rent prices.

The cost of living in Bari is similar to Naples, and the lifestyle is also comparable. For instance, renting a studio flat in Bari’s Murat District would cost around €700 per month for two people.

In addition to enjoying all that Bari has to offer, you can also plan some incredible excursions along the coastline. Explore the beautiful towns of Polignano a Mare or Monopoli, or head inland to Valle d’Itria to get an authentic taste of Puglia.

Europe offers a variety of locations for workation and digital nomad life, but the Canary Islands is one of the most popular choices. This group of seven volcanic islands is situated near the coasts of Africa, but it belongs to Spain. All the Canary Islands are easily accessible from major airports in Europe.

Aside from its pleasant weather and low cost of living, one of the best things about the Canary Islands is that it shares the same time zone as London, making it ideal for workers to carry out their usual duties during office hours.

We spent almost seven months living and working in Malaga a few years ago and have since visited the city numerous times. We love Malaga, and it’s no secret. Along with Barcelona, it’s one of the best locations for a workation period abroad in Europe. If you consider going nomad in Spain, Malaga is an excellent place to start. It’s a smaller version of Barcelona regarding lifestyle, prices, and culture.

The city has many attractive destinations and unique architectural features. It’s also well-known among expats, who have formed a large community that welcomes people from all over the world, especially the UK. Malaga isn’t just limited to the city; there are other cities and small towns to consider moving to. Additionally, make sure to check out our guide to Malaga in winter.

We have visited Palma de Mallorca twice recently, at two different times of the year. However, during the summer months, the island was overcrowded with tourists, making it a bit overrated as a location. On the other hand, visiting Palma de Majorca during winter will give you a taste of local life and authentic Mallorcan traditions.

An international airport serves the beautiful town and is well-connected with the rest of the continent. Palma may seem small, but it is very large and diverse, with unique features and stunning architecture. If you’re looking to unwind and relax, Palma de Mallorca offers an Arab Bath that is ideal for your time off. Additionally, the vibrant bars in the city offer the opportunity to explore the local food scene during breaks from work.

If you have a weekend to spare, renting a car and exploring the rest of the island is highly recommended. You can discover the fine wineries in Binissalem, the ancient market in Inca, the beautiful beaches and golf clubs in Alcudia, or even get the best postcards in Pollença.

The perfectly balanced lifestyle is the primary reason for selecting Lisbon as your workation destination in Europe. The city boasts delicious yet inexpensive wine, good food, and lovely weather that will envious your colleagues. Furthermore, Lisbon provides easy access to incredible beaches, which many people are unaware of.

Moreover, Lisbon has one of the most vibrant communities of Digital Nomads and reasonably priced co-working spaces. In our opinion, Lisbon is the perfect workation city that is just a short flight away from many European cities and offers unique excursions and day trips, from the Algarve and Faro to the romantic northern city of Porto.

The Algarve, Portugal

Stretching across Portugal’s alluring southern coast, the Algarve region has become a haven for digital nomads and remote workers in recent years – it’s easy to see why. This sundrenched region boasts jaw-dropping beaches, sleepy fishing villages, world-class golf courses and a laidback atmosphere.

The Algarve offers so much variety across its 100 miles of coastline – you have vibrant Lagos in the west and historic Tavira in the east. And endless charming towns and villages in between with thriving expat communities. Wherever you go, the region is well connected with speedy internet to keep digital nomads plugged in.

We’ve spent many relaxed afternoons sending emails from Faro, the Algarve’s capital, before unwinding on islands accessible only by boat. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, the Algarve has become a beloved remote work hotspot.

Madeira, Portugal

Dubbed ‘Europe’s Hawaii’, the volcanic island of Madeira is one of Portugal’s hidden gems – and an unspoiled paradise for digital nomads seeking outdoor adventure between working hours. Located out in the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira enjoys spring-like weather all year similar to the Canary Islands.

With high speed, reliable internet across the island, Madeira makes working remotely an absolute dream. There are seaside balconies at the tip of steep cliffs, botanical gardens in Funchal, and pastel houses overlooking the harbor that provide no shortage of dreamy work locations. When we finally shut our laptops for the day, we have our pick of hiking trails through vineyards or world-class surf spots to catch a wave.

If you are planning a Europe Staycation or Workation, consider Belgrade on the east side of Europe. It is one of the top ten European destinations for workation and offers a wide range of opportunities for every type of traveller. We were very surprised by Belgrade, it is clean, very European, young vibes and good feeling. It’s cheap to stay and have a pleasant work/life balance.

Belgrade is a hot spot in the ranking due to its adaptability and newness after years of war. The city features a gorgeous old town and a completely new city. It is cheap and lively, with a vibrant nightlife, and remote workers will love the new coffee shops.

The cost of living is quite reasonable, averaging out on this side of Europe. In a traditional environment, you can rent a typical Serbian house outside the city centre for as low as €400.

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is an exciting city that deserves to be on the list of top 20 Europe workation destinations. Unfortunately, not many people consider it a destination for digital nomads due to its weather conditions.

However, Sofia is not very touristy, which makes it an excellent choice for interacting with locals. In recent years, many events have occurred in Bulgaria, especially in Sofia. The Bansko Digital Nomads’ festival is held in rural Bulgaria, typically during the summer.

Warsaw is one of Poland’s oldest cities, boasting a beautiful architectural landscape. However, a noticeable disparity exists between the former Soviet part of the city and the new buildings. If you have some free time, exploring the old town is a great way to get to know the city. Take advantage of the local bars and their affordable prices. You can get an entire meal at a local restaurant for about €7.00, and breakfast will only cost you around €3.00.

One downside is the lack of access to co-working spaces and international networking opportunities. Nonetheless, planning a workation in Warsaw can still be a valuable experience that can enrich your knowledge and inspire you. To help you plan your trip, check out our two-day guide to Warsaw.

Berlin is an excellent choice for first-time remote workers. The city boasts great attractions, lovely cafes and a vibrant nightlife, making it one of our favourite destinations in Germany.

We love the town so much that we’ve often considered relocating all our activities there. Many of our friends work and live in Berlin and talk about the city as one of the most exciting and vibrant places they have experienced so far.

Apart from the classic tourist activities, you should also explore the local markets and indulge in the local life. Berlin is perfect for a workation in Europe as it offers the chance to organise day trips using trains and buses easily. Additionally, the internet speed is above average, and many international communities, like London, have numerous events organised annually.

WHERE TO STAY IN BERLIN

Dublin, Ireland

While we worked remotely from Dublin for very short, it was fun. This is one of the main reasons we suggest Dublin if you can work remotely. Night in Dublin are wild, and perfect to disconnect from your daily tasks.

While Dublin may be best known for its Guinness and literary heritage, Ireland’s capital also boasts a burgeoning community of digital nomads and remote workers. This is thanks to the friendly locals, lively pub scene and the city’s efforts to cater better to location-independent professionals. Also, consider that we are in love with the city architecture, which makes Dublin an instagrammable city in Europe.

Rest assured, the WiFi connections here are top-notch. We’ve spent many fulfilling months here, jumping from one cosy cafe to the next while working with baristas who greet you like an old friends. When we’ve put the work down for the day, there is live music around every corner – we’ll never forget hearing traditional folk songs in the taverns by the River Liffey.

Despite being a capital city, Dublin still retains so much charm and soul – and everything here is conducive to working productively and living well as digital nomads. The Irish are so welcoming of remote workers too!

Tirana is a new addition to the workcation destinations in Europe. As Albania gets better and better more people are visiting the place, and spending time working from here. We spent about 3 months between summer and autumn and it was fantastic.

Tirana, Albania Albania’s colorful capital provides fertile ground for digital nomads and remote workers with its affordable costs of living, vibrant café culture and emerging art scenes. Split days between holing up in sleek co-working spaces and unwinding at village-like Blloku’s cafés. With few tourists and expat comforts like craft breweries and artisanal coffee shops, Tirana makes for an offbeat Balkan work hub.

Workation Rules

  • You must be able to work from anywhere in the world
  • You must have an income that justifies your lifestyle
  • Travellin light is essential
  • Keep a positive attitude
  • Book in advance
  • Set specific goals for every move

You must be able to work from anywhere in the world

To have a successful workation, the first rule is to work from anywhere you want, be it your sofa or a different part of the world. You will also need to convince your boss (if you have one) to allow you to concentrate on your work from a different location rather than being confined to your house in the centre of London.

Some of the most common jobs that allow remote work are freelance writing, virtual assistant duties, tech support, programming, website building, and marketing. It’s important to note that a workationer moves their usual work location to a different part of the globe, not someone who finds occasional jobs in the places they visit.

You must have an income that justifies your lifestyle

To participate in the new movement of workation, it’s essential to pay attention to one specific requirement: you should earn more money than you spend. This simple rule allows you to constantly move and switch places, exploring new cultures and destinations. To become a consistent workationer, you need to be able to afford this chosen lifestyle.

Your income will determine your next destination, which may vary depending on your monthly target. Therefore, it’s essential to earn enough money to support your workation lifestyle and continue discovering new places.

Travelling light is essential

When it comes to workation rules, having a light suitcase is crucial. Minimalism is key. We drew everyone’s attention when we arrived in Palma de Mallorca for a conference and our workation in Barcelona, carrying only a backpack. As you constantly move, you must forego some comfort and pack only the essentials. To adopt a digital nomad lifestyle, you must get used to travelling light.

Carrying heavy luggage is not ideal as it can increase wait times at the airport and increase the risk of losing your luggage during one of the many layovers to your destination. Alternatively, you can learn how to pack your luggage smartly to minimise the need to buy items on-site. Packing smart is easier than you think.

Keep a positive attitude

Positivity is key to leading a fulfilling life, irrespective of the challenges that life throws at us. While travelling frequently and facing tight deadlines, it can be overwhelming to deal with a boss who expects you to work while on vacation and to organise last-minute travel arrangements, including flights, accommodation, and transportation. It’s difficult to constantly uproot your routine, leave friends and familiar places behind, and adapt to new environments. However, if you maintain a positive attitude even in the most trying circumstances, good things will come your way, thanks to the law of Karma.

Book in Advance

Booking in advance is crucial for any independent trip. It allows you to relax and enjoy your activities and saves you money. As a digital nomad, it’s important to know that the earlier you book, the better. Some of the most exciting accommodations can be fully booked even for just one day in the middle of the month, making them unavailable for longer stays.

Furthermore, popular attractions are often fully booked and waiting until the end of your workation to see them can be risky. Therefore, booking your activities in advance is essential to ensure you don’t miss out on any experiences during your trip.

Set specific goals for every move

Living a workation lifestyle may make you feel like you have a lot of free time, but the days tend to fly by quickly, and you may lose track of time. To avoid this, we set specific goals such as writing a certain number of blog posts, learning new skills, and focusing on affiliate marketing. Setting clear and measurable targets allows you to hold yourself accountable and track your progress.

It’s easy to get dizzy and lose sight of your goals when you’re constantly changing your work location, like your bed sheets. That’s why organising your every move with specific targets to reach and measure is important. Remember, you’re on a workation, not a vacation.
