In Canggu, there are numerous warungs and traditional local eateries that offer an authentic Indonesian culinary experience. These small restaurants, known for their affordable and delectable dishes, often prepare their meals using family recipes passed down through generations.

The menu at Warungs is typically fixed and includes a variety of rice dishes, grilled meats, and spicy sambal sauces. In some places, vegetarian and vegan options are available, suitable for various dietary needs.

Among the warungs in Canggu, our favourite is Warung Sika. We frequently dined there for both lunch and dinner and were consistently impressed by the quality of the food. However, it get quite crowded during peak hours.

Warungs generally have a casual and friendly atmosphere, where locals often stop by for a quick bite and conversation. It is important to note that with the rise in tourism in Canggu, several new “warungs” have opened that primarily target tourists. These places tend to have higher prices and may not offer the same level of authenticity as traditional warungs.

While relaxing on the sandy shores or sipping a refreshing beverage at a nearby beach bar, you can witness the sun gracefully descending on the horizon. The enchanting sunset paints the ocean and its surroundings in a breathtaking golden hue.

During peak season, the beach may become quite crowded. To secure a prime spot, we recommend arriving before sunset. Grab a beer, catch up with your friends and enjoy the sunset on the beach. It will be, for sure, one of the most incredible experiences ever.

During our time in Bali, it was our routine to meet our friends on the beach, drink a beer or a coconut and enjoy the beautiful colours of the sunset.

Visit the Sunday Markets

To unwind on a lazy weekend, we opted for La Brisa Market, a renowned weekend market situated in the heart of Canggu, just steps away from the beach. Open exclusively on Sundays; the market presents an eclectic array of products ranging from clothing and accessories to home decor and artisanal crafts.

Strolling through the stalls, we were captivated by the unique handmade items and creations that Bali is renowned for. Although La Brisa does not charge an entrance fee, securing a table on weekends can be a challenge.

A local working in his ricefield in Sidemen

Rent a scooter and explore the rice fields

During our two months in Bali, we rented a scooter and used it to travel all around. This freedom allowed us to explore at will, spontaneously create day trips, and adjust our plans on the fly. Even just beyond the village of Canggu, the scenery begins to transform.

The lush rice fields gradually replace the dreamy white villas, creating a uniquely beautiful memory of the Balinese landscape. In fact, Canggu is enveloped by stunning rice fields that provide a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Renting a scooter is the ideal way to explore the countryside and immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery.

What is the best currency to carry in Bali? Well you need to have cash to witness the sunrise from Mount Batur sunrise view

Early bird for the sunrise from Mount Batur

At 2 am, the alarm went off, and our driver was already waiting outside our homestay in Seminyak. We were excited to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure – hiking an active volcano. So, we set off towards Mount Batur, located at the eastern point of the island.

The hike to the summit takes around two hours and begins early in the morning. Therefore, it’s crucial to start early to catch the sunrise. The hike can be quite challenging if you’re not physically fit, but the landscape is awe-inspiring. From the summit, you get a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes, lakes, and mountains. As the sun rises, the sky turns into a beautiful orange and pink hue, creating a tranquil atmosphere.

The lake below Mount Batur adds to the surreal landscape. In addition to hiking, you can also take a jeep to a panoramic spot for an effortless experience. The way up the steep hills is fantastic, surrounded by lush trees and solidified lava. The guide will also take you to the lava spot, driving on board a jeep for an exciting adventure. This unforgettable moment is something you don’t want to miss.

Join a Beach Cleanup

We were saddened by the sight of the large amount of litter on the beaches during our time in Canggu. However, we were grateful to be part of the Canggu Digital Nomads community, which arranges beach cleanups to give back to the community that hosts them.

We spent two months in Bali with the Nomeo Community and thoroughly enjoyed it. Participating in a beach cleanup is an excellent way to contribute to the environment and the community while also having a meaningful experience during your visit to Canggu.

You can choose to participate in one of the regularly organised events that occur throughout the year or arrange your own with a group of friends or fellow travellers.

By doing so, you will not only assist in keeping the beaches clean, but you will also have the opportunity to meet like-minded people who are dedicated to preserving Bali’s natural beauty. It is an excellent approach to make a positive impact and contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet.

Lazy days at Alternative Beach

Alternative Beach has recently been added to Canggu’s social and bar scene and has become quite popular among the locals. Despite its location not being near the beach, it has features that resemble a beach bar, such as a tiki bar in the pool, floating beds, a platform to jump from, a swing, and a slide.

The predominantly white-washed decor gives it a feel reminiscent of Mykonos or Santorini. It’s a popular weekend destination for both expats and tourists, and it also features a restaurant and an exceptionally well-designed hostel with top-tier dorm accommodations in Bali.

Take a day trip to Ubud

If you have a few extra days in Bali, we highly recommend visiting the town of Ubud. As the cultural centre of Bali, Ubud is famous for its art, music, and traditional crafts.

Useful things to know before visiting Canggu Bali

How long should you spend in Canggu?

If you are visiting Bali for the first time, you should head to Canggu or Seminyak, as these are two of the most popular holiday destinations in Bali. However, we recommend that you stay here for a few days only, even though you might have everything you need for a perfect holiday in Canggu.

If you are planning to spend one week in Bali, we suggest that you check out Uluwatu and Ubud. But, if you have more time, you can experience the bustling life of Canggu and then head to the quiet North to visit Lovinia and Munduk for a truly Balinese experience.

To summarise, we recommend planning three days in Canggu for the best time in the cool Bali atmosphere.

Best time to visit Bali

If you are planning a trip to Bali, you might wonder what is the best time to visit this Indonesian paradise. Bali has a tropical climate with warm and humid weather throughout the year. Therefore, the island experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season from April to October and the wet season from November to March.

If you prefer sunny and dry weather conditions with minimal chances of rain, it is best to visit Bali during the dry season. However, keep in mind that this period also falls within the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds. But if you would like to avoid crowds and don’t mind occasional rain, then visiting during the wet season is a good option.

Another essential factor to consider when planning your Bali trip is the island’s festivals and events. Bali hosts many colourful and vibrant festivals, such as the Galungan and Kuningan festivals, which celebrate the triumph of good over evil. These festivals usually take place in April, May, September, and October.

How to get to Canggu

Canggu is a place that can be easily reached from Ngurah Rai International Airport, which is located in Denpasar and is a short distance away from Canggu. However, due to Bali’s chaotic traffic, the 45-minute drive to the airport now takes an hour and thirty minutes during peak hours.

Taxis are available outside the airport, some private and some for sharing. We recommend booking your transport in advance to ensure fast-track transportation.

Alternatively, you can book a Grab taxi outside the airport. The company that manages transportation in Southeast Asia has recently implemented a hub for their drivers, and you can go there and wait for your car.

However, if you choose the pick-up point there, please note that there is an additional fee of 5K IDR for airport taxes, which the Grab driver can add to your card, or you can pay cash.

Renting a scooter in Bali

Getting around Canggu

Canggu is a network of streets that vary in size from small alleys to main thoroughfares, all leading to the beach. There are three entry points to the beach: Mejan, Stone Beach, and Batu Bolong. Renting a bike is a great way to explore Canggu, both its hidden gems and well-known roads.

The famous Canggu shortcut, which passes through rice fields, provides one of the most stunning views in Canggu. Riding a bike is the quickest and most popular way to get around Canggu.

However, it’s worth noting that ride-sharing and private services are easy to book on your phone. While we don’t recommend it, you can also navigate Canggu by bicycle or e-scooter, which are the most environmentally friendly ways to travel in Bali.

Rent a scooter in Canggu

On our first day in Canggu, we decided to rent a scooter. I was so frustrated by the traffic and lack of pedestrian paths. I immediately contacted the scooter rental shop that my friend recommended earlier.

Scooters are a popular mode of transportation in Canggu, and while we always try to prioritise sustainable options, there are limited alternatives available. However, it’s important to note that driving in Canggu requires some level of expertise. Therefore, you should only rent a scooter if you feel confident in handling the moped and have prior experience.

The monthly rent for a basic scooter in Canggu should be between IDR 50K and IDR 100K. However, keep in mind that the cost of living in Canggu is increasing every month.

If you plan to stay longer, you can expect to pay between IDR 1 Million to 200K to 2 Million for a standard 150cc scooter, depending on the duration of your stay. The Vario scooter we had was excellent, and we even rode it for two hours in heavy rain to reach Monduk.

There are numerous scooter rental options in Canggu, but unfortunately, some of them are scams. We used the same rental scooter in each visit, and never disappointed. If you need the contact, happy to send you privately on Instagram.

Go Jek and Grab

If you’re struggling to drive around Canggu, don’t worry. You can easily book transportation through Grab or Gojek on your phone. These popular and affordable services offer reliable motorbike taxis that are always available.

For added peace of mind during your vacation, consider purchasing travel insurance from HeyMondo. It could save you a lot of money in case something goes wrong.
