The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is a remarkable complex in the heart of Bangkok and is considered one of the city’s most significant attractions.

Despite being a popular tourist spot, it is one of the most photogenic places in Bangkok and is worth visiting. It was constructed in 1782 by King Rama 1 and served as a royal residence for 100 years.

The Palace includes a magnificent temple of the Emerald Buddha within the complex. Although it is a must-see location, be aware of strict site entry rules.

Unlike other temples, the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple have strict rules regarding clothing and covering, and admission is only granted to those who adhere to these rules.

Below, you will find clear examples of what is necessary for admission to the Grand Palace and Temple.

Bangkok Grand Palace Etiquette

IMPORTANT INFO | The Grand Palace is not just another temple; there are some rules that you must follow and remember before your visit:

  • You must wear long trousers/a long skirt
  • Shoulders must be covered with a shirt
  • Scarves over sleeveless blouses ARE NOT ALLOWED
  • Crop tops or sleeveless shirts ARE NOT ALLOWED

If you are not appropriately dressed, you cannot enter. However, a shop inside sells appropriate clothes, which is a little more expensive than usual.

Wat Saket (Golden Mount Temple)

Wat Saket, one of the less expensive temples, is a must-visit photo spot in Bangkok. We stumbled upon it while heading to a nearby 7-Eleven and couldn’t resist exploring these striking temples.

The Golden Mount Temple was built during the Ayutthaya period in 1700, offering an excellent view of Bangkok from the top.

Climbing almost 400 steps to reach the summit is worth it once you see the breathtaking view.

Wat Ratchabophit

During our stroll in Bangkok, while searching for a lunch spot, we stumbled upon one of the most breathtaking temples we have ever seen.

Wat Ratchabophit is not commonly mentioned in many guides, but it is definitely worth adding to your Bangkok itinerary, and it’s free to visit.

The locals love celebrating weddings in this temple, so it’s a great spot to witness traditional Thai culture. The first time we visited, a wedding ceremony took place, which was truly a wonderful experience.

Therefore, if you find yourself in Bangkok, you should definitely plan a visit to Wat Ratchabophit.

It offers some of the most picturesque locations in Bangkok, perfect for taking some great Instagram photos.

Wat Benchamabophit

Wat Benchamabophit, also known as The Marble Temple, is a hidden gem in Bangkok. Its luxurious and light-coloured marble construction makes it one of the city’s most beautiful places to visit, and it’s one of our favourite temples so far.

If you’re looking for a perfect spot to take stunning photos for your Instagram feed, this temple is a great choice.

It’s less crowded than Wat Arun, and you can take cute pictures from every angle, especially during golden hour. Make sure to take snapshots from the front of the country guard to get the best views.

Wat Ratchanatdaram

One of the most incredible places to visit in Bangkok is this temple. It is famous for its Loha Prasat, located in the centre and gives the temple a unique appearance. Wat Ratchanatdaram is known as the Metal Castle due to its bronze roof tiles.

The 37 golden spires covering the rooftop are this temple’s most striking feature. Each spire represents one of the 37 enlightened virtues of Buddhism.

During our travels, it was fascinating to learn about different cultures, and visiting this temple was one of the most impressive things we experienced.

Although Loha Prasat is relatively small compared to other temples, it is definitely worth visiting.

PRICE | 20 THB

Wat Samphran Dragon Temple

If you plan a trip to Bangkok, visit Wat Sampran, one of the city’s most unique temples. The Dragon Temple, as it is commonly known, is just one hour from the city centre.

The temple’s most striking feature is the 80-meter pink tower that rises up into the sky, spanning 17 floors. The tower is surrounded by a beautiful green dragon that wraps around the entire spiral structure.

Wat Sampran is one of the most famous landmarks in Bangkok, and it’s easy to see why. This temple is a truly unique architectural masterpiece that’s definitely worth a visit.

It’s one of the most instagrammable places in Bangkok, so be sure to bring your camera!

The dragon surrounding and protecting the temple is truly awe-inspiring, and it’s one of the things that makes Wat Sampran so special.

If you have a week to spend in Bangkok, you should definitely take a day trip to Wat Sampran. You won’t be disappointed!

Jim Thompson House

This is the prettiest spot in Bangkok, and the best part is that the entrance is free if you want to take pictures around the garden.

However, we recommend stepping inside the house to admire the beautiful details, Thai furniture, and flowers that are today included in Jim Thompson’s collection.

Known as the Thai Silk King, James H. W. Thompson is the American soldier who started the Thai silk industry. Before leaving, make sure you visit the gift shop and feel the silk quality.

Wat Phra Kaew | Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is situated in the vast complex of the Royal Palace.

Its full name is Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, so don’t be surprised if you come across this name; it’s the same temple.

While the temple’s architecture is similar to other temples in the city, its gold colours look especially beautiful at sunset.

You can visit the temple inside the Royal Palace for free, but there is a strict dress code that you must follow to gain entry. If you don’t comply, you will not be allowed in.

We had to return the next day because nobody had warned us about the dress code. Men and women should dress modestly and cover their entire bodies.

Wat Phra Kaew is one of the most inspiring places in Bangkok and is certainly worth a visit. However, be aware of scammers outside the Grand Palace who may try to convince you that the site is closed. Always check for yourself, and don’t be fooled by them.

7 Best markets to visit in Bangkok

Bangkok’s markets are a must-visit tourist attraction. With many options, you can’t leave the city without exploring them.

We have curated a list of Bangkok’s favourite and most insatgrammable markets. Some specialize in a specific product, such as vegetable and flower markets, while others offer various goods, including food, drinks, and cultural activities.

  • Chatuchak Weekend Market
  • Maeklong Railway Market
  • Rot Fai Market
  • Train Night Market
  • Flower Market
  • Nakhon Pathom Night Market
  • Saduak Floating Market
  • Train Night Market Srinagarindra
shopping in Chatuchak market in Bangkok in the weekend

Chatuchak Weekend Market

This is, without any doubt, one of our favourite markets in Bangkok, and it’s one of the largest weekend markets in Thailand. It’s open Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM until 6 PM, and believe us; you will need at least 3 hours to explore a good section of the markets.

Thanks to its endless stalls and shops, Chatuchak market is one of the best markets in Bangkok. Hop on the metro, exit Kamphaeng Phet (this is the best station) and enjoy the vibes that this market has to offer.

Maeklong Railway Market

Maeklong Railway Market is one of Bangkok’s most famous markets, making it an excellent location for street photography. The market is unique, located on both sides of an active train track.

During the middle of the day, the train passes through the middle of the market, which is an incredible experience.

If you’ve ever been to Hanoi’s train street in Vietnam, you’ll know what to expect. Visiting this market will provide you with charming photography spots.

However, remember that the train only passes through the market at 8.30 AM, 11.30 AM, 2.30 PM, and 5.40 PM. If you plan to visit the market specifically for the train, remember these times to avoid disappointment.

Rot Fai Market

Before leaving Bangkok, we had to visit the Rot Fai Market. With its multiple colourfully tented stalls, this night market is one of the best Instagram spots in Bangkok.

No matter how many markets you explore in Thailand, each one is worth visiting. The atmosphere at Rot Fai Night Market is unique, full of delicious food and colourful aesthetics.

While walking through the stalls, you will have numerous opportunities to snap your pictures. Once you are done, take a moment to enjoy the warm Bangkok night with a cold Chang or two.

Train Night Market Ratchada

Train Night Market Ratchada is a must-visit destination for your Bangkok night photography itinerary. Similar to Rot Fai Market but with a different vibe, this market will awaken you.

The Train Night Market Ratchada is a local spot where you can indulge in delicious food and shop for cute clothes. Spending our evening at this market was a unique way to explore Bangkok, and we captured some adorable shots.

Best flower markets in Bangkok Thailand

Flower Market

I was eager to visit the flower market when I heard about it. The last time I had gone to a flower market was back home in London, and we had a wonderful time taking pictures.

This time was just as enjoyable but with a bit more quirkiness. The Pak Khlong Flower Market is a paradise for flower enthusiasts.

You can find local shops with the most beautiful floral arrangements. The compositions are so cute that you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take Instagram-worthy photos. If you want to make the most of your visit and avoid the crowds, try to go in the morning when the temperature is still pleasant.

Outside the flower market is an authentic Bangkok street where you can explore the vegetable market and take some beautiful street photos of local life. It was quite an experience!

Nakhon Pathom Night Market | Wat Sampran Dragon Market

Wat Samphran is a temple located 40 kilometres away from Bangkok city in the province of Nakhon Pathom. The temple is surrounded by a fantastic atmosphere that will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, you can visit the lively market, located about 25 kilometres from the temple in the province of Bangkok.

This is a great alternative to the typical tourist activities in Bangkok, as it’s located outside the city walls.

The market is open from 5 PM to 9 PM, and you can enjoy local food for a fraction of the price you’d pay in the city. Although Bangkok and Asia are already affordable by Western standards, you can see how much cheaper prices are away from big cities.

The market may not be as picturesque as other sightseeing spots in Thailand‘s capital, but it offers a unique experience for street photography enthusiasts.

Saduak Floating Market

The Saduak Floating Market is becoming increasingly popular among tourists, and even though we usually prefer less crowded destinations, we decided to include it in our Instagrammable Bangkok guide.

The market sits entirely on water and has a distinctive atmosphere that people love. In the past, it used to be a more local spot where vendors sold goods from boats.

However, there are more tourists than locals nowadays, and the market has become a hub for souvenirs rather than bargains.

Despite this, if you’re visiting Bangkok for the first time, it’s worth checking out the Saduak Floating Market to get a taste of the city’s unique vibe.

You can enjoy a boat ride and capture some unforgettable shots of Bangkok. It’s also a popular destination for tuk-tuk drivers.

Instagrammable rooftops in Bangkok

Skywalk rooftop view - A gorgeous sunset over Bangkok - Is Bangkok worth visiting

King Power Mahanakhon

Let’s talk about the best Instagram spots in Bangkok among rooftop bars. Although there are plenty of rooftop bars in Bangkok, we have picked the most instagrammable ones for you.

The King Power Mahanakhon is the second-tallest building in Bangkok and offers an incredible view of the city. It is one of the most fantastic sky bars in the city and worth a visit. The skywalk here has become quite popular, and you can find many photo spots taken from this location on Instagram.

The best time to visit this rooftop bar is during sunset when the city gets darker and the sky displays unique colours, making it one of the most incredible moments to witness. You can plan your visit and pre-book the tickets. Although the entrance is not free, it is definitely worth the money.

Sky Bar

Sky Bar, known for the famous movie “The Hangover”, boasts one of the best open-air bars in the city. With its elegant atmosphere and stunning view, Sky Bar is one of the most instagrammable in Bangkok.

Although it may not be the most affordable location in Bangkok, the experience and view are definitely worth the price. Arrive before sunset to enjoy the beautiful colours in the sky – from pink to orange – and get a complete view of Bangkok at night.

Best rooftop views in Bangkok | Bangkok vs Chiang Mai everything you should know

W Hotel

W Hotel can be a great option if you’re searching for a place to stay in Bangkok. The hotel has one of the most popular rooftops in Bangkok, thanks to its rooftop garden and pool, which make it perfect for Instagram.

W Pool is located on the 6th floor and is one of the best places to spend a warm afternoon in Bangkok. The hotel is extremely comfortable and offers a stunning view of the city. This beautiful complex, located in one of the city’s busiest areas, is our favourite Instagrammable hotel in Bangkok.

It’s definitely worth booking your stay here.

Vanilla Sky Bar

One alternative option to enjoy the city view in Bangkok is Vanilla Sky Bar, located on the 36th floor of Compass Skyview Hotel. This place is famous for its infinity pool and stunning view and is often referred to as one of the best Instagram spots in Bangkok. You can enjoy drinks and snap pictures while the sun shines over the city.

However, Vanilla Sky Bar is quite expensive and may not be suitable for those on a tight budget.

Nevertheless, it is a lifetime experience, and if you book in advance, you might get a cheaper rate for a stay, even just for one night, at the Compass Skyview Hotel. Check the availability now and make the most out of your Bangkok trip!

Best free views of Bangkok

Paper Plane Project Co-Working

We lived in Bangkok for a while, and one of our favourite co-working spaces is Paper Plane Project. Located close to the BTS Thong Lor station, one of the reasons why we love working from here is because it’s FREE; there is no day pass required; however, to connect to the wi-fi, you must purchase food or drinks.

Being on the 40th floor means that there is a lot of daylight and an amazing view of Bangkok. From here, you can admire the beautiful skyline and gorgeous sunset!

Heaven rooftop Bangkok

Heaven rooftop bar

This is our latest addition to our favourite rooftop bars in Bangkok, and the cool thing is that it’s close to the famous King Power Mahanakon. Just a few minutes away from the metro, you can enjoy a drink with a gorgeous view of Bangkok.

Prices are pretty affordable for a small draft beer: We paid 141 THB (it includes service charge and taxes). If you are backpacking in Bangkok, this is definitely an affordable place to visit while enjoying a sunset over Bangkok.

Octave rooftop lounge & bar

Located a few minutes away from Thong Lor and close to the W Market, Octave rooftop bar is one of the best spots in Bangkok to watch a lovely sunset.

To be fair, we witnessed the best sunset from here! The rooftop opens at 5 PM and stays open till late, usually around 2 AM.

As it’s a popular spot, it gets super busy, and tables tend to be full; however, you can book your spot in advance. However, remember the following carefully.

If you reserve your spot in advance, you will be allocated a table; if the table has high chairs, there is a minimum spend of 1000 THB per person (£23/$29).

For lower chairs, the minimum spend is 2000 THB (£46/$58). We booked online, and they allocated the table with a minimum spend of 2000 THB, but we kindly asked them to move us to the other table, and they agreed.

They accept walk-ins, and there is no minimum spend because they allocate you the standing table (meaning no chairs). The view from there is amazing, so absolutely worth your money!

Additional Instagram spots in Bangkok | Bangkok Photography

Talat Noi | Hidden gems in Bangkok

Attention all street art enthusiasts! This is the perfect destination for you. Our dear friend Dave gave us a tour on our first day in Bangkok, and we headed to Chinatown.

We didn’t expect to find some of the best Instagram spots in Bangkok, but we were pleasantly surprised. Talat Noi in Chinatown is the best place for street art in Bangkok and also the most Instagrammed location. We were fortunate to visit on a Sunday afternoon when it wasn’t crowded.

Talat Noi is still relatively unknown, so it’s worth exploring. While you’re there, don’t forget to try some authentic Chinese food like spring rolls and noodles. We encourage you to explore Chinatown thoroughly.

If you’re fond of photography like us, you’ll be amazed by the number of photogenic spots in Talat Noi. This corner of the Thai capital was a fantastic discovery, and we highly recommend it as one of the top Instagram locations in Bangkok.

Head over to some of the most popular coffee shops like 32Bar Specialty Chocolate (make sure you try the house’s blend 70% dark chocolate), Mother Roaster, Timo and Tintin, with its cute rooftop overlooking IconSiam shopping mall.

Lumphini Park Bangkok best photos

Lumpini Park

Bangkok has many attractions, including its stunning rooftop bars, temples, and delicious cuisine.

However, when it comes to picking the best Bangkok Instagram Spots, we cannot forget to mention Lumpini Park. This park is the perfect place to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful moment.

If you’re an early riser, you can take a morning stroll around the park and have the entire place almost to yourself.

Furthermore, you can rent little boats and leisurely ride around the lake to capture amazing Instagram shots. You’ll definitely be able to snap some beautiful photos to share with your followers.

Aeroplane Graveyard | Quirky things to do in Bangkok

The Airplane Graveyard is permanently closed, and no planes are left in the yard.

This spot was considered one of the coolest Instagrammable places in Bangkok, and we were lucky enough to visit it. Even though it was a new addition to the city landscape, it became quite popular among tourists.

The land owner placed a few planes there; over time, some families started living there.

They would charge a small fee to tourists who wanted to walk around the yard and take pictures. It was a unique spot that was definitely worth visiting if you were in Bangkok and looking for the best Instagram spots. However, unfortunately, it’s no longer an option.

Song Wat Road

Bangkok can be quite overwhelming, but once you understand the city and where to go, everything becomes easier.

Chinatown by night is amazing, but if you are looking for a unique experience, we recommend going out to the popular tourist routes.

Hop on a boat and get off Rachawong Pier; from here, start to explore Song Wat Road, one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Bangkok.

Along the way, don’t forget to stop and grab a cold iced coffee in one of the many cute cafes (we recommend Local Boys Coffee or Sit in Soi), step inside Road of Cinnamon for some unique craft souvenirs (they sell a book about Song Wat Road for just 180 THB which is a unique way to learn more about the history of this place) and explore admire the incredible street art, from the two elephants murals to the colourful “Belgium in Thailand 2024” fresco.

Toti and Ale enjoying the view at Benchakitti Park

Benchakitti Park

We absolutely love Benchakitti Park. It is right in the heart of the city centre, but at the same time, it feels like you’re far away from busy and crazy Bangkok.

While working around the park, you have an amazing view of Bangkok. In fact, if you can, try to visit Benchakitti Park for sunset—the colours are just amazing!

Aeroplane Market Bangkok | Chang Chui Plane Market

The Chang Chui Plane Market is a fascinating new addition to the already impressive sights of Bangkok. The venue is incredibly picturesque and has a unique character.

The food court is anchored by a large aeroplane that serves as the centrepiece. Various stands are serving delicious food and drinks.

The aeroplane market is a great spot for taking Instagram-worthy photos in Bangkok. Visit the market on weekends to enjoy the lively atmosphere, live music, and the company of locals.

The Chang Chui market is a hidden gem in Bangkok, perfect for taking night photos. The market is particularly beautiful when the colours come alive after sunset, making it a great location for photography enthusiasts.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, visit the market in the morning. The market opens at 11 AM, but it is usually quiet at this time. With only a few locals around, you can easily snap photos of one of the most beautiful corners in Bangkok.

Ancient City (Mueang Boran)

If you think you’ve seen it all, wait until you reach the Ancient City. This Palace is guaranteed to leave you speechless.

The massive complex features replicas of some of Thailand’s most famous landmarks and temples. It’s a unique place where you can take amazing Instagram photos. The entrance fee for adults is 700 THB, and you can conveniently pre-book your tickets online by visiting the website.

Erawan Museum | Instagrammable Bangkok

We didn’t anticipate falling in love with this place as much as we did. It’s one of the best Instagram spots in Bangkok, yet not many people know about it. Its stunning pink circular structure offers numerous opportunities for taking pictures.

Every angle is perfect for capturing your photos; you need to stroll around and find your ideal spot. The museum has three levels to explore and visit its charming spots.

Don’t leave without taking a snapshot of the spiral staircase and stained-glass roof. You won’t regret it.

You can purchase a combined ticket to the Ancient City and Erawan Museum and save some money. You can reserve it here.

Most instagrammable cafes in Chinatown

Best Instagram cafes in Bangkok

Coffee Room Yaowarat

Located in the heart of Chinatown and known for its cute bow croissants, this cafe quickly became one of our favourites in the area. We had an iced caramel macchiato (like usual) and enjoyed their signature croissant before heading to the famous Sampheng Market.

Pick your favourite roast from house blend to special beans, and enjoy this cute cafe. Before leaving, make sure you head upstairs and check out the Fabric Gallery.

Unicorn cafe | Instagrammable cafe in Bangkok

I still remember when our friend sent us a picture of this place. It was unbelievable, so we visited the Unicorn Cafe in Bangkok. The cafe is adorned with unicorn-themed decorations and is an excellent location for taking pictures. You can even rent a unicorn on-site, which is super cool and amusing.

Although the cafe is a bit pricey compared to other local shops, it is still a unique way to enjoy Bangkok and its Instagram-worthy cafes.

As you walk through the hot streets of Bangkok, you will notice that several restaurants and cafes are adorned with beautiful flowers and corners perfect for Instagram.

While searching for a lunch spot, we stumbled upon The Blooming Gallery, an adorable and Instagram-friendly cafe in Bangkok.

Upon entering, you can grab a refreshing drink or a quick meal and take Instagram-worthy photos to share with your friends and followers.

Local Boys Coffee

If you are a coffee lover, this place is for you. Although prices are a little high, the quality is completely different from the standard coffee that you might try in Bangkok. Try their signature coffee, like coconut dirty coffee and enjoy the refreshing blend while snapping a few pictures.

Make sure you ask for takeaway so you can get their cute cups perfect for your Instagram shots!

Best time to visit Bangkok

Bangkok is an all-year-round destination, but planning your trip carefully is important. During the hot season, the temperature can soar up to 40 degrees, and walking around during the day is not recommended.

Therefore, the best time to visit Bangkok is between November and February, considered the “cool months.”

The temperature can drop to around 22-25 degrees in the evening, making it much more comfortable to explore the city. Make sure you keep this information in mind when planning your next trip to Thailand.

Bangkok is often the first city many travellers visit in the country, and visiting during the dry season is highly recommended to enjoy all it has to offer fully.

Additionally, some of the best Instagram spots in Thailand are located in Bangkok, and some may be closed to the public during the monsoon season.

Below, you will find a small brief on how temperatures vary:
November to February (Cool Season): 22 to 39 degrees
March to June (Hot Season): Between 30 and 40 degrees
July to October (Rainy Season): 26 to 34 degrees

Things to know before travelling to Bangkok

Thailand Visa

Travelling to Thailand has become incredibly easy in recent years. Tourists holding passports from the EU, UK or US no longer require a visa to enter Thailand. However, if you wish to get a visa on arrival, you must meet a few conditions.

To qualify for the visa on arrival, you must possess proof of an outbound flight from Thailand. We could show that we were crossing the border with Laos from Chiang Rai and had booked accommodation. Singapore Airlines accepted this as evidence of our onward journey.

The visa on arrival allows a stay of up to 30 days. (As per July 2024, many countries can now have 60 days VOA). If you wish to extend your stay, it is possible to do so for a fee of around $30. Please remember to bring some passport photos with you, as they will be required for your visa application.

The majority of the shops and markets accept only cash

If you’re travelling to Thailand for the first time, it’s important to note that most shops and markets only accept cash payments. We recommend withdrawing the maximum amount from an ATM to avoid any inconvenience. This way, you’ll only pay the withdrawal fees once. Typically, the fee is around 250 TBH. (Fees used to be 220 THB but recently they have increased)

TIPS | The 7-Eleven convenience store accepts card payments with no minimum required. While other places may accept cards, they often charge an additional 3%.

It’s better to have a sim card before travelling to Thailand

You need a SIM card if you plan to stay in Thailand for a little while. You can check the best plan here or pick up a sim card once you arrive in Thailand.
