Visit Chiang Rai white and blue temples.
Chiang Rai is a city worth visiting for many reasons, but three major temples stand out and are a must-see on your list of things to do. In this paragraph, we will focus on two of these temples: The Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) and The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun).
The Blue Temple is a contemporary masterpiece of art and architecture that captivates visitors with its mesmerizing blue exterior and intricate details. It’s a stunning example of the creativity in Chiang Rai.
The White Temple, on the other hand, is another architectural marvel that showcases the intricate carvings and stories of Buddhist teachings. These temples are not only spiritual landmarks but also artistic treasures. They are among the major attractions of Chiang Rai, and you should include them all in your Thailand Bucket List.

Lady Buddha Temple at sunset is fantastic
Chiang Mai has three major temples, and each deserves its own paragraph. Let’s start with Wat Huay Pla Kang, which is best visited at sunset. You should plan to spend a couple of hours there. As the sun sets, you’ll witness a breathtaking spectacle at the Lady Buddha Temple, also known as Wat Huay Pla Kang.
The serene atmosphere, combined with the panoramic views of the city, creates an unforgettable experience. It’s the perfect time to reflect, take stunning photographs, and marvel at the city’s transformation as it transitions from day to night. Getaway to Laos
During our travels from Chiang Mai to the Laos Border, we stopped in Chiang Rai. Many Digital Nomads view it as an overnight stay for easy access to the border for visa renewal or adventure. We did the same, but to embark on a journey down the Mekong River and explore Laos, but that’s a story for another time.
Chiang Rai’s strategic location near the Laos border provides opportunities for overlanding adventures in Southeast Asia. You can journey to the nearby town of Chiang Khong and, from there, take a bus or tuk-tuk ride to reach the harbour of Huay Xai on the other side of the Mekong River.
If you plan on staying in Asia for an extended period, we highly recommend a trip to the enchanting town of Luang Prabang in Laos. The journey was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.
Baan Dam | The Black House
There are three popular temples in Chiang Rai, but one of them is particularly special: the Black Temple. You can reach this singular worship place by public transport (Bus Route 1), from the bus terminal in the city centre.
The complex is one of the largest in Thailand, with over 40 buildings, one more impressive than the others. It’s more than just temples, it’s a museums. Spend about 2 hours, going around fascinating relics and art pieces collected all around Southeast Asia.

There are plenty of outdoor activities in Chiang Rai
We were stunned by the authentic beauty of Chiang Rai countryside. Having explored the Karst in the south and landscapes like Ninh Binh and Sapa, Chiang Rai, in some ways, resembles them.
Although many visit Chiang Rai only as a day trip, we truly invite you to stay longer. It’s a destination on its own, after all.
That it what we suggest look forward to exploring Chiang Rai. From tea plantations to hiking trails, Wild Elephant encounters to Hill tribes, coffee plantations and much more, there is something for everyone to enjoy beyond the typical rice fields.
Tea Plantations and Rice Fields
As mentioned earlier, exploring the tea plantations and rice fields is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of Chiang Rai’s city centre. The lush tea plantations that cover the hills surrounding Chiang Rai offer a tranquil atmosphere, with the scent of tea leaves and stunning panoramic views that invite you to relax and enjoy the moment.
The climate of this part of Thailand, help a lot with the growing coffee culture. Producers experiment on this hills, extending fields over the boundaries with Pai, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Basically the Thai Golden Triangle, as a new meaning. If you understand what I mean.

Doi Luang National Park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. The park boasts a diverse ecosystem that includes lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and rare wildlife species. The hiking trails in the park lead to breathtaking viewpoints that offer panoramic vistas as far as the eye can see.
As you explore the park, the gentle symphony of cascading waterfalls and babbling streams accompanies you. Towering trees reach up towards the sky, creating a sanctuary for an astonishing variety of flora and fauna.

Elephant Valley near Chiang Rai
The Elephant Valley sanctuary, located a short distance from Chiang Rai, is a unique and ethical haven for majestic creatures to roam freely in their natural habitat. Unlike other sanctuaries, this one is situated in a natural reserve and prioritizes the well-being of the elephants over everything else.
These rainforests are a crucial component of the park’s ecosystem, providing it with its unique charm and sustaining its delicate balance.
Hiking Trails and Panoramic viewpoint spots

Where is Chiang Rai?
If you’re searching for an authentic and unique travel experience, look no further than Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand. This charming city is located approximately 785 kilometres north of Bangkok, making it easily accessible for those who want to explore the region’s cultural and natural attractions.
Chiang Rai is a serene and beautiful destination, surrounded by rolling hills, lush valleys, and peaceful rivers. Its close proximity to the borders of Laos and Myanmar also offers the possibility to overland into neighbouring countries and explore the wild parts of Southeast Asia, just as we did.
Is Chiang Rai safe?
Chiang Rai is a safe and welcoming destination for adventurers. We felt secure and comfortable during our visit, even when we were out late at night. The city is constantly bustling with both locals and tourists, and its reputation for warm hospitality is well-deserved.
The authorities in Chiang Rai are committed to ensuring visitors’ safety and well-being, but as with any travel destination, we advise you to be cautious, especially in crowded places.
Visa for Thailand
Most tourists are eligible for visa-free travel for a specified period, usually 30 to 60 days. This grants ample time to explore the city’s attractions, engage with its cultural offerings, and immerse oneself in its unique charm.
For those planning a prolonged stay, it is advisable to research and apply for the appropriate visa before embarking on the trip. Thailand offers various visa options, including tourist, business, and long-stay visas, each with requirements and conditions.
Thailand currency
The Thai Baht is widely accepted throughout the city, and you’ll find ATMs, currency exchange services, and banks easily accessible for your convenience. However, withdrawing cash in Thailand can be quite expensive if you’re coming from the UK.
Most ATMs and banks charge a mandatory fee of 220 Baht per withdrawal (£ 4.96 | € 5.8 | $ 6.29). If you plan on staying in the country longer, we suggest withdrawing cash in larger amounts at May Bank (the yellow one). This bank allows you to withdraw up to 30,000 Baht at once, roughly £700 (€790 | $860).
