Gembleng Waterfall Infinity Pools guide

The alluring landscape, hidden in the jungle, and the fantastic infinity pools were what drew us to Gemblen waterfall. Gembleng has been one of Bali’s best-kept secrets for years, but we anticipate that you will have to queue to enter soon as the island becomes increasingly crowded year after year.

Gembleng Waterfall is known locally as “Air Terjun Gembleng.” You will find yourself spending hours soaking in the freshwater, in natural pools, some of which are perfectly round. You will have around 7 to 8 pools to relax in at the top, so there is plenty of room for everyone.

Our experience at Gembleng Waterfall

Although Gembleng is in a remote location and requires navigating through narrow streets through rice paddies, it is by far one of the best waterfalls we visited in Bali. The rocky pools with the view, the small donation fee, and the picture-perfect spots are true highlights.

We even enjoyed the hike to the top, which was easy despite being steep, as it took us deep into the lush jungle. You will pass a wooden bridge among the waterfall, which adds to the magic.

The stairs to reach Gembleng Waterfall Bali

The walk up to the waterfall

Distance: 250m each way
Elevation gain: 50m
Difficulty: Easy but steep

Contrary to other waterfalls in Bali, where you trek down, at Gembleng, you trek up. Around 60 flights of stairs are concealed and embedded in the jungle. Be wary, as the steps can be slick. Every flight of stairs has a viewpoint that opens up a beautiful vista.

The trek is around 30 minutes but well-paved. In fact, ascending was overall one of the best trails compared to other waterfalls. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, even though it is possible and easy with flip-flops.

Best Photo Spot at Gembleng Waterfall

There is one reason Gembleng Waterfall is quickly becoming one of Bali’s most Instagrammable spots. The falls offer unique landscapes and photo opportunities for photography enthusiasts.

We’ll admit we were drawn to the falls by the photos on Instagram. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made, and we’re here to share our Instagrammable Gembleng Waterfall inspiration. We flew our drone and shot from the pools at every angle possible, as there are a couple of falls where you can play with the angles or shoot from the top.

Can you Swim at Gembleng Waterfall?

Swimming is permitted at Gembleng. Unlike other Balinese waterfalls, the water at Gembleng is calm and deep enough for swimming. The inviting natural pool at the base of the falls is a perfect spot to cool off after a hike. The crystal-clear water is refreshing and invigorating. Take a dip and let the cool water wash away your worries.

What to expect from visiting Gembleng pools?

You will find a series of natural pools carved into the grey rocks, like a jacuzzi without bubbles. They descend into a gorge, and the atmosphere is completely secluded, like a secret kept within the jungle.

We particularly enjoyed the pool at the top, where the water originates. It is often overlooked because it is less Instagrammable than the ones at the bottom. However, the water is fresher from the top, and you have a beautiful view.

We want to remind you that this place is sacred to the Balinese people. We ask that you respect their deep heritage, which is a part of their daily life. Please be aware of local celebrations and be polite.

Things to know before visiting Gembleng Waterfall Bali

Gembleng Waterfall drive from Canggu and Ubud

Where is Gembleng Waterfall

First and foremost, it is essential to know that Gembleng waterfall is in a secluded region of Bali. The Sidemen area is a relatively new expat community that is escaping the hustle and bustle of Seminyak, Canggu, or Ubud. Gembleng waterfall is located in the village of Sideman, Gianyar, on the eastern side of Bali. Please see the map below for reference.

If you are staying in Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak, or Uluwatu, it will take approximately 2.5 hours to reach the waterfall. If you are staying in Ubud, it will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

During our two-month stay in Bali, we enjoyed taking weekend trips. We would leave Seminyak on Friday and explore this part of East Bali, Ubud, and Monduk. The best place to stay around Gembleng Waterfall is Hideout Bali.

Best time to visit Gembleng Waterfall | Air Terjun Gembleng Bali

There is no bad time to visit Gembleng Waterfall. However, since all the other waterfalls have become so busy, even this secluded spot is starting to get crowded. We went to Gembleng waterfall Bali in the early morning during the week, and it was perfect. We only encountered a few tourists and were able to enjoy a couple of pools without interruption.

You should be aware that this is a sacred site that was only recently opened to the public by the locals. It may be closed for ceremonies, but this will only be for part of the day, and you may witness something extraordinary.

Getting to Gembleng Waterfall is simple from anywhere in Bali. We rode our scooter to the amazing location, and we were at the gate within 2.5 hours. The journey wasn’t tedious because you’ll pass through a beautiful natural landscape that is always thrilling.

Of course, the distance is shorter if you start from Ubud, and it will only take 1.5 to 2 hours to drive. If you don’t feel comfortable riding a scooter in Ubud or the distance seems too far, don’t worry. You can hire a private car with a driver for the whole day and have a great time. CHECK THIS TOUR.

Gembleng Waterfall entrance fee

While in Bali, you will quickly realize that you must pay for everything, including parking, admission, and even the opportunity to view a vista (such as Devil’s Tears in Nusa Lembongan). However, there is a suggested donation for access to Gembleng Waterfall. You may pay whatever you want, and it is considered a gesture of respect for the locals who work hard to keep the location running, clean, and safe.

You place your donation in a wooden box at the entrance. We recommend donating around 20,000 IDR (1.40$), which is the same price as the admission fee for Leke Leke Waterfall and other attractions. If you are able to contribute more, please do so, as it will help the locals and you will not have to pay for parking.

Air Terjun Gembleng is a holy site that is sacred to the local people. As previously stated, it was only recently opened to the public and is quickly becoming a popular tourist destination in Bali.

Facilities at Gembleng Waterfall

One of the things we enjoyed most about Gembleng is that the locals are developing the waterfall. They have built a warung, or small shop, at the top of the falls that offers coffee, food, and a restroom. When we visited, only part of the warung was open, but everything will be ready and running by the time you read this post.

Book your travel insurance before travelling to Bali

During our time in Indonesia, we did not experience any safety concerns in Bali. However, we want to remind you that driving in certain areas, such as Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta, can be difficult due to heavy traffic. If you are planning on renting a bike, we strongly advise you to purchase travel insurance that covers any potential incidents. Request a quote now.

Where to stay near Gembleng Waterfall Bali

For a more relaxed experience, consider the Amed area, which is about an hour’s drive from the falls. Staying closer to the East Coast will give you many options for a romantic weekend in Bali. Below are the accommodations we recommend closer to Gembleng Waterfalls and surrounding areas.

Things to do Near Gembleng Waterfall

We visited Gembleng pools early in the morning to avoid the crowds, though there were few people. Around lunchtime, we left the facilities and spent the afternoon exploring Siedeman, an undeveloped area secluded and away from the chaotic famous Bali west coast.

Gianyar is the closest village to Gembleng, and it is a must-visit for lunch while taking in the rice fields. Drive through the paddies and discover hidden streams running down the hills. You will be alone most of the time, so take your time and enjoy the scenery.
