Weather in winter in Athens
Even though Athens boost one of the best climates in Europe, and winter is never too cold, the below chart will give you a clear idea of what to expect and average temperatures.

What is winter like in Athens?
Winter in Athens is fantastic; the local activities, bars and restaurants are equipped for a pleasant stay, with hot points to keep you warm. In fact the temperatures are mild, with average in the low 10°C (50s Fahrenheit).
At the time of my visit (December), it was warmer than in the UK, and at some point, at midday, I had to take off the jacket and go sightseeing in short sleeves.
The coldest months are January and February, when highs reach 12 to 15 °C (53 to 59 °F). With proper layers, the weather is enjoyable for sightseeing.

Winter Events and Festivals
You will never get bored in Athens, even if you are visiting the city in the low season like January and February. Athens keeps energy high with a calendar full of events despite the cooler temperatures.
In February, flamboyant costumes take over during Carnival season. Costumed kids and adults alike join the festivities with feasting and dancing.
The Athens Open Air Film Festival brings open-air cinema to the city in wintertime as well. Bundling up to watch Greek and international films against an illuminated Acropolis backdrop promises an only-in-Athens experience.
The SNFCC offers incredible activities, mostly for free (based on pre-booking online).
Also, you should look forward to sipping cinnamon-spiced wine while browsing handmade crafts from Greek artisans at this traditional Christmas market. The sweet smells of loukoumades doughnuts and other seasonal treats will certainly spark our holiday spirit.

Is Winter in Athens Nice?
Winter in Athens was surprisingly pleasant. The city takes on a quieter charm with fewer tourists, making it ideal for exploring historical sites like the Acropolis without crowds.
I was by myself while exploring the charming boutiques surrounding Monastiraki Square. Well, during the weekend, the Plaka district was buzzing and not cold at all. Actually, I wasn’t either wearing my thick jacket.
The mild temperatures and occasional rain add a cosy touch to the experience. Plus, winter brings cultural events, festive celebrations (still in love with the SNFCC events for free), and the chance to savour Greek cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. Overall, we find winter in Athens quite nice and enjoyable for adults and kids.

How cold is it in Athens in winter? Temperatures you should expect.
While winters in Athens see cooler temperatures than the hot Mediterranean summers, conditions remain relatively mild compared to other European capitals.
In December and January, average highs reach 13-16°C (55-60°F ) during the day. It may feel brisk in the mornings and evenings, so layers are key.
Overnight lows in Athens average 7-10°C (45-50°F). However, most apartments and hotels have excellent heating systems. The high humidity in Athens also means the chill rarely cuts to the bone like in drier climates. Not like in the UK!
As winter transitions into spring in March, daily highs increase to 16-18°C (60-65°F). This means that you will get an even more pleasant temperature in the afternoon and can stay out all night long without freezing.
We must highlight that rarely the temperature dips below freezing in Athens, even in the dead of winter. While northern Greece and the mountains receive snow, the city is in the south and benefits from an average Mediterranean climate.

What to do in Athens in winter
Enjoy Athens like a local and beat the crowds by visiting during the off-season winter months. Here’s our insider’s guide on what to expect for weather, costs, and fun during the winter in Greece’s charming capital.

Soaking up the Athenian Winter Sun
We often mention Athens as one of the best Capitals in Europe for Digital Nomads, or at least to carry your laptop and enjoy the sunshine while the rest of the continent is freezing cold. Read our guide to the best workcation destinations in Europe.
In fact, while winter days in Athens may require an extra layer, the average temperatures are always above 10 °C (between 50°F and 60°F). This is one of the main reasons why you should visit Athens in winter.
Mild conditions allow us to meander winding streets and archaeological sites easily and comfortably throughout the day. When the climate is not at its best, it is also perfect to skip the crowds. With fewer crowds, popular places like the Acropolis seem all yours.
In December, the Archaeological Site was at one-third of its capacity, and we could snap great photos without anybody around.
Experiencing Authentic Athens and Festive Greek Hospitality
What surprised me the most is that Athens is pretty festive, and of course, Greek Hospitality is top-notch. With fewer people around, locals concentrate more on you and deliver the best welcome to the city.
After all, we must say that visiting Greece in winter helps you connect more deeply with Athenian culture, perhaps by participating in centuries-old traditions.
If visiting Athens in January, on the 17th, you must pin on your calendar the St. Antoni Feast. The patron saint of lost souls is honoured across Greece. Revellers take to the streets in colourful costumes, music fills the air, and Greek food like loukoumades doughnuts will tempt our taste buds.
Also, consider that during Athens’ quieter winter, local restaurants and shops remain open and accessible. You can easily sneak into your favourite restaurant even without a reservation.

Exploring Popular Sites Without Crowds
Athens off season is a bargain. The Acropolis offers a 20% discount if you visit off-season instead of during peak summer.
Visiting the popular sights during the morning, might hit the spot as most of the cruise ships, gets off groups after 10am. However, we still suggest you enjoy the late afternoon on the Acropolis for chances to have the sight all for you.
Many museums stay open through winter as well, allowing you to skip ticket lines. One of the best highlights of our trip to Athens is definitely the Acropolis Museum, much to learn there. If you still have spare time, also visit the National Archaeological Museum.

Winter Dining, Drinking, and Shopping
I had a different experience in Athens compared to my last visit to Greece. While in my Thessaloniki itinerary, I was all within their traditional dishes, in Athens, I suggest you do the same; Athens’ winter provides the perfect chance to savour authentic Greek cuisine.
Athens is a fervent capital, and so all shops remain open during winter. You will have no shortage of getaway from bitter temps with glasses of ouzo or fiery raki liquor while getting swept up in the boisterous fun of a true Greek night out.
Also, consider signup for this food tour in Athens, like we did, to better understand their gastronomy and the history behind every product.

Combine Athens with Greek Island Hopping
Even though it is winter, you should embrace an exciting adventure to the famous Greek Islands. Ferries and flights connect Athens to top island destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, and more year-round. Even though there are limited options compared to summer.
Just a 30-minute flight or 5-hour ferry from Athens, you’ll discover Santorini’s cliffside towns and volcanic caldera views minus peak season crowds. Of course, you can’t swim as the water is too cold, but the landscape is still unique.
Winter island hopping in Greece means scoring cheaper hotels, availability at popular eateries, and space to roam top attractions.

Things to know before visiting Athens in winter
How to get to Athens
To reach Athens, we suggest flying to Athens International Airport – you can easily find a budget ticket with Wizz Air, Easyjet or Ryanair. Within 2/2.5 hours, you will get from Paris, London, Rome, Milan or Berlin to Athens starting from €20 return.
If you want to reach Athens by train or bus, the city is easily connected by land from other Greek Cities (Thessaloniki ahead) or international hubs, Belgrade, Sofia, and Skopje.
How to get from Athens Airport to the city centre
Athens airport is well connected to the city, one of the best in Europe. Opting for a taxi provides a convenient and quick journey, but is the most expensive. Instead, the express bus service, X95, is a cost-effective choice, reaching Syntagma Square in about 40 minutes.
Alternatively, the metro’s Blue Line connects the airport to the city centre efficiently. We recommend this last option because it is still affordable, regular and easy to understand when you first approach Athens.

How to get around Athens in winter
Athens is extremely walkable, especially if you have your accommodation central. We stayed at the Electra Metropolis, which is mid-way between Syntagma and Monastiraki Square. However, for longer distances the metro is your go-to for its efficiency, covering key landmarks.
Buses are another reliable option, offering extensive routes, and the ticket price is just €1. For a scenic tour, hop on a tram or explore on foot in the pedestrian-friendly areas. This is the best way to embrace the Athenian lifestyle, strolling through neighbourhoods like Plaka.

What to pack for winter in Athens
While planning our trip to Athens, it was hard to pick the right clothes. In fact, due to the variable climate, the city was very different compared to rigid London weather.
We suggest packing layers. Breathable base layers, sweaters, jeans or trousers, and a warm jacket must be in your backpack. We always travel light to avoid problems of losing luggage and also for flexibility while extensively hopping from place to place.
If you are spending a weekend in Athens the regular hand luggage which you purchase for free with budget airlines is enough.
Be sure to pack sunscreen and sunglasses, too. Yes, it might not be hot like summer, but you are in Southern Europe. Even in winter, Athens enjoys ample sunshine, especially midday when UV rays remain strong.
A lightweight scarf, gloves, and hat provide extra cosiness for open-air meals or long strolls through ruins as the sun dips lower in the sky. And lip balm and lotion prevent chapping from winter winds. This is a must-have in Alessia’s backpack.
