Pidurangala is the best hike, while Sigiriya could be considered a walk-and-stairs hike. We have been to Sri Lanka twice and hiked the holy rock of Pidurangala both times, while Sigirya only once.
In this guide, we’ll help you plan your Sri Lanka itinerary and choose between Sigiriya and Pidurangala based on hiking difficulty, entrance price, organisation, and many other factors.
Without further indulging, let’s dive into our fair comparison: Pidurangala vs Sigiriya.

Sigiriya Rock vs. Pidurangala Rock | Which one should you hike?
We visited both Pidurangala for sunrise and Sigiriya by lunchtime (on the same day). Both are considered good hiking for the best view and are really popular as sacred places. From early in the day, you will find a mix of travellers and locals on the top.
While Pidurangala is a proper hike through narrow, dusty, and uneven paths, Sigiriya, on the other hand, is a pleasure walk through ruins, gardens, and steep stairs to the top of the rock, 180 metres above the Sri Lankan jungle.
Quick overview: Pidurangala or Sigiriya?
Pidurangala Rock is a less popular, more adventurous, and cheaper alternative to Sigiriya Rock in Sri Lanka
Sigiriya Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit landmark in Sri Lanka

What is Sigiriya Rock?
Let’s start by providing some more information about the Lion Rock, as it is widely called and recognised, or even Sinhagiri. The remains of a fortress, above the clouds on top of a 180-metre-high monolith, have fascinated travellers and researchers.
This is the most famous Unesco World Heritage Site in the country. Sigiriya is today an ancient ruins site of a former Royal Palace. There are several legends about this palace, making it a true historical and revered sight in the country.
Before getting to the top, you will walk through the gardens and the water system, which is even more advanced than in some cities nowadays.
Often called the Lion’s Rock because of the Lion’s paw at the entrance of the palace, it was once a complete lion body with an enormous head. The ruins today are one of the most visited sites in the country and are well preserved. Avoid visiting Sigiriya Rock during public holidays, as it is one of the favourite day trip locations among SriLankans.

What is Pidurangala Rock?
Now, it’s the turn of Pidurangala Rock. Located facing Sigiriya Rock, this was once inhabited and impenetrable. Legends say that the monks were in Sigiriya but were forced to move to Pidurangala by King Kassapa, who was willing to build the best Royal Palace.
The king offered them a “pile of gold”. In fact, in the local language Pidurangala is the exact translation.
You will understand that this rock is a symbol since entering. In fact, in order to start the hike, you must pass and pay respect to a Buddhist Temple. Actually, Pidurangala needs its popularity for one simple factor, it is budget-friendly.
While it’s very expensive to hike Sigiriya as a tourist (A ticket costs $30), Pidurangala is accessible for a very small fee (Less than $1), which is an offering to the temple.
Should I go for Sigiriya Rock Climb or Pidurangala Rock Hike?
If you have time, we suggest planning hiking in both Pidurangala and Sigiriya. However, if your itinerary of Sri Lanka is packed, and you must choose one, you should go for Pidurangala. The hike is easier but adventurous.

Pros and Cons of visiting Sigiriya
Sigiriya is the most popular sight in Sri Lanka, and you must definitely visit it. Sigiriya is more of a walk than a hike. However, take into consideration factors that might take you away from visiting it. The Lion Rock entrance ticket is very expensive, and it attracts large crowds and groups.
The ruins are incredible if you understand the history and take into consideration that the fortress was built a hundred years ago. There is no clear idea of how they moved all the materials to the top with the knowledge of that time.
On the other side, the Pro is that the hike to Sigiriya is much easier compared to Pidurangala. Still, the stairs are hard to climb with people pushing.
The way to the summit could be stressful because this place tends to get crowded quite often. We suffered so much from the hot wave and humid temperature that queuing was our least problem. You need to be prepared to climb Lion Rock, and you should bring water and a hat.

Pros and Cons of Hiking Pidurangala
The major pros of Pidurangala is the view over the lush greenery and wild jungle of Sri Lanka. I still remember the feeling of my first time climbing there. This is the major Pro of hiking Pidurangala, one of the best of my life, yet too short to be honest.
In order to get to the top for sunrise, you must leave your accommodation during the night (the further away you are, the earlier you have to start). There are no lights on the road, so you must hire a tuk-tuk driver.
Pidurangala is becoming more and more touristy, so they have improved the path. On our recent visit, I didn’t get lost, as the first, as they lit up all the way to the top. However, still carry an extra torch with you.

How much does Sigiriya and Pidurangala cost?
The choice between Pidurangala and Sigiyia also depends on the costs, as both vary very much. While the transport fees are almost the same, with Sigiriya obviously going slightly higher, it’s the entrance fee that varies a lot between Pidurangala and Lion Rock.
The entrance to Sigiriya costs 10,000 LKR ($35 | £27 | €32 | AU$ 53). When we first visited the entrance ticket was half of the price. The entrance to Pidurangala is just 1,000 LKR ($3.5 | £2.60 | €3 | AU$ 5) costing a fraction of Sigiriya, 500 LKR, which is about 3$ USD.
As you can see, the cost is one of the main attractions to Pidurangala, and many Backpackers opt for this option.
Which is much more difficult to hike: Pidurangala or Sigiriya?
We found both Pidurangal and Sigiriya pretty easy to hike. However, when visiting Sigiriya, you will find yourself walking around with very few shades and climbing steep stairs surrounded by monkeys with people pushing.
On the other side, Pidurangala is rougher, with nature surrounding you, not many monkeys, but a climb almost to the top that deters many people from reaching the summit. Another thing to consider is the amount of nest wasps around the staircases, which hospitalised 22 tourists in 2024. Luckily, we didn’t have this problem. Instead, we were suffering from the heat so much.
Another thing that might make you think that Pidurangala is hard to hike, is that most of that is in the dark. If you are considering hiking up Pidurangala Rock, be more prepared than we were.
We relied on my phone’s flashlight to illuminate the path, which was manageable because many others were doing the same. The Pidurangala trail is dusty and uneven. To be honest, my knees were quite painful on the way down, and I noticed some hikers tackling the trail in flip-flops. That’s not a good idea—don’t do it!
How Long Does the Climb Take?
Sigiriya Hike: Although climbing Sigiriya Rock was easier, it was challenging due to the crowds. The ascent to the summit took us over two hours, even with our guide showing us other attractions on the rock, such as Cobra Rock, the Mirror Wall, and the Throne, which helped us avoid the larger crowds.
Unlike Pidurangala, Sigiriya does not open until 7 am, which is when visitors start arriving at the UNESCO site. We recommend taking your time to climb Sigiriya Rock, pausing whenever possible, and finding spots in the shade to rest.
Pidurangala Hike: Climbing Pidurangala in the dark of a Sri Lankan night is an adventure in itself, and the first time took us longer than expected, but on the recent visit, with the lights additions, it took half of the time. Yep, we didn’t get lost this time. The hike typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your fitness level and trail conditions (avoid when it rains and after). Despite starting early in the morning, we encountered a slight queue arriving at the top, as the final step is a climb, which is quite difficult for most. The narrow passage through two rocks takes time to avoid injuries, as you have to bend in between. Take your time.
Hike both for the perfect day out
We suggest planning a day out in Sigiriya town, with a nice sunrise hike to Pidurangala, a return to town for coffee and lunch, and a sunset visit to Sigiriya Rock.
Sounds like a plan, right? Following this itinerary, you can compare the two, seeing the full landscapes from different points of view and at different times of the day.
To make it happen, you have to get up early, depending on your accommodation position, and reach Pidurangala at opening time. The gate of the temple allows visitors to start hiking at 5 am every day.
The hike takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your fitness level. Time to rest for breakfast (Get a coffee at Barista in town) and lunch, maybe an Elephant Safari in Minneriya National Park, close by.
In the afternoon, climb Sigiriya for sunset. Show up at the ticket office no later than 5 pm; this will give you plenty of time to reach the summit in time for the sunset.
