Hiriketiya Accommodation Guide: Where We Actually Stayed
We’ve stayed in Hiriketiya twice and got it wrong more than once. Here’s every place we actually booked, seriously considered, or regret missing — sorted by vibe, not just price.
We’ve stayed in Hiriketiya twice, checked out even more places on foot, and made a couple of budget-driven decisions we’d probably tweak next time.
Our first stay was uphill at IMA House, and when we came back we booked Harmony Park instead of our first-choice options because it was simply cheaper and available. It was the best place to get around Hiriketiya even on foot. Read our guide to what to do in Hiriketiya for more.
However, having a scooter is a must, as guesthouses and hotels are spread out within the bay and Dickwella.
Accommodation in Hiriketiya isn’t like the rest of the South Coast: prices swing wildly, WiFi is a gamble, and the “best” place to stay depends entirely on what you’re actually here for.
This isn’t a list of every hotel in town. It’s the handful we’ve actually slept in, worked from, or had friends rave about from the Slow Life co-living crew — organised by vibe, not just price, because that’s genuinely how different this bay splits itself.

Why Where You Stay Matters in Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya is compact, but not all compact places work the same way. In theory, almost everything is a short distance from the bay. In practice, that “short distance” can mean a sweaty uphill walk, a muddy side road, or needing a scooter every time you want dinner.
From our experience, there are really three ways to approach Hiriketiya:
- Stay right by the bay if you want to walk everywhere and be in the middle of things.
- Stay slightly out, toward Pehebiya Road or the hill, if you want more peace.
- Stay in Dikwella if you prefer space and lower prices, and don’t mind using a scooter.
Best area to stay in Hiriketiya
For the best area to stay in Hiriketiya, stay right by the bay if you want the full Hiri experience: walkable cafes, surf, Dots, and zero scooter.
If you want a calmer base, go slightly uphill toward Pehebiya Road (where barefoot hostel and Bacuzzi pizza are)or over into Dikwella — that’s where you get more space, better sleep, and fewer “why is this road like this?” moments.
This area is where we spent most of our second trip to Hiriketiya. In our opinion, Dickwella Beach is better than Hiriketiya Bay. Honestly, the sweet spot is the bay edge, not deep inside it and definitely not too far out.

Best for Social Life & Nightlife: Dots Bay House
If you want to be where everything happens, Dots Bay House is it. It’s the cafe/restaurant/club/hostel hybrid where almost everyone in the bay meets up after surfing, and where we went for their 10th anniversary techno party.
Rooms are modern and minimal; there’s a pool, and you’re never more than a two-minute walk from the action.
The trade-off: it’s loud. Music pumps most of the day, and if you need deep focus for work, this isn’t your base — we cover that in more detail in our Hiriketiya digital nomad guide. Also, no real scooter parking; you’ll be jamming your bike into a bush nearby.

Best for Yoga & Boutique Stays: Salt House and Jasper House
Salt House is the closest thing Hiriketiya has to a proper wellness retreat — open-air yoga shala, pool, and a laid-back four-star feel. We dropped in for classes and used it as a light-work spot a few times, though we’d warn you it’s almost entirely outdoor seating, and the heat gets brutal by 1 pm if you’re trying to work a full afternoon.
Jasper House, perched on a quiet hill at one end of the beach, is the more boutique pick — open-air rooms, a private lap pool, and monkeys chattering in the palms at dawn. If yoga and quiet mornings matter more to you than nightlife, this is your spot.

The Place We Almost Booked First: Casa Vana Hiriketiya
Casa Vana was actually our number one option before we chose Harmony Park. In the end, we went cheaper, not because Casa Vana didn’t make sense, but because we were trying to keep the trip under control.
From what we saw, the location is one of its biggest strengths. It’s central enough to feel practical, but it doesn’t look too deep into one of those awkward roads that make you question your suitcase choices five minutes after arrival.
The rooms looked new and cosy, and the whole place gave the impression of being much easier than some of Hiriketiya’s overly remote or badly accessed stays. This is the kind of option I’d put in the “comfortable mid-range without overthinking it” category. For couples especially, it feels like one of the safest choices if you want somewhere that already looks right before you even open the room door.

The Biggest Regret Not Booking: TUNA Hiriketiya
TUNA Hiriketiya is probably our biggest accommodation regret in Hiriketiya. We were travelling too fast, doing our usual thing of leaving bookings too late, and by the time we looked properly, it was already gone for our dates. It had sold out within about two weeks of our arrival window, which tells you a lot. For us, this is where to stay in Hiriketiya for couples.
We still sneaked in to check it out, and it looked fantastic. Polished, attractive, and one of those places that immediately feels like it would elevate the whole stay. This is exactly the kind of accommodation worth mentioning because it adds something beyond “here are the hotels on Booking.” It’s the place we’d tell friends to lock in early if they want one of the nicer, more desirable stays in town.

Best for Budget: Harmony Park and IMA House
Our first stay was IMA House, uphill, at £20/night. Fine, but a bit of a walk, glad we had the scooter on our Southeast Coast Sri Lanka itinerary. This is run by a local family (mother and two young kids. We were so happy to contribute to their little family.
I’ve personally enjoyed the black coffee and fresh bananas while looking at the wind swinging the high palms.
Then on our Hiriketiya fun part 2, after a short spell in Tangalle, we found Harmony Park — still £20/night but with AC, walking distance from our favourite brunch spot, and honestly the score we found for the best budget stays in Hiriketiya. WiFi was strong, and mornings came with a free monkey show on the steel roof, whether we wanted one or not.

Best for Social Couples With a Scooter: Barren House
Barren House made our shortlist when we were looking for somewhere to stay during a shorter, more fun-focused stretch of the trip. At the time, our co-living option only had rooms for longer stays, so we were also looking at polished places with either dorm or private room options for a couple of nights.
Barren House looked good because it felt more polished than a hostel, still social enough, and had both private rooms and a pool. For couples, that’s a really nice middle ground. The reason we didn’t book it was simple: we wanted to walk home after nights out, not get on a scooter after drinks or late dinners.
So this is a very good option, but mostly if you’re comfortable being a little outside the most walkable pocket of the bay.

Best for Digital Nomads: Slow Life (Nomadico) Co-Living
If you’re staying longer than a week, this is the one to know about. Slow Life is the co-living space where we actually worked, met most of our friends, and found the community that made Hiriketiya different from every other South Coast town we tried.
They run a “Free Coworking Thursday” that’s become something of a local institution — check their socials for the next one. We go deeper into why this place works for remote work in our Hiriketiya digital nomad guide.
Minimum stay is 7+ days – check availability on Booking.com.
Hiriketiya vs Dikwella: Where Should You Actually Stay?
Stay in Hiriketiya if you want to be right in the centre, walking distance from the bay, cafes and nightlife — you’ll pay for it, especially in high season, and there’s some scooter/tuk-tuk noise on weekends.
Stay in Dikwella if you want a quieter base with a bit more breathing room. You’ll need a scooter or a “Pick Me” tuk-tuk to reach the bay.
Be aware, we found that pricing and bargaining with locals can get aggressive if you don’t have your own transport — but it’s the better fit if you’re the type who wants Hiri during the day and quiet at night.

Where We’d Stay Next Time
If we go back, I honestly think we’d split the trip again. We’ll definitely stay longer in Hiriketiya. A few nights somewhere practical and social, then a few nights somewhere more polished or quieter once we’d had our fill of the Hiri energy.
That’s partly why places like TUNA, Casa Vana and Barren House are useful additions to this guide: they reflect how people actually choose accommodation here, weighing location against comfort against whether they want to walk home or drive.
The mistake is thinking there’s one perfect place in Hiriketiya. There isn’t. There’s only the right place for the version of the trip you want.
Is it better to stay in Hiriketiya or Dikwella?
Stay in Hiriketiya for convenience and social life. Stay in Dikwella for quieter nights and better value, especially if you have a scooter.

Final Thoughts
We stayed in gorgeous places in Sri Lanka, many are in the Ahangama area, which is fast developing for pinterest ready accommodation. However, we have to admit it wasn’t easy to pick the best in Hiriketiya. While there are many boutique hotels in Hiriketiya, the reality on the ground is very different. We preferred having easy access to beautiful beaches in and around Hiriketiya.
Accommodation in Hiriketiya is weirdly high-stakes for such a small place. Book too late and you miss the places you actually want. Book too far out of the centre and you’ll get annoyed every time you want dinner. Book right in the middle of it all and you might end up sleeping next to someone else’s party soundtrack.
But that’s also why this guide matters. The best place to stay in Hiriketiya isn’t just about price or star rating. It’s about whether you want yoga, nightlife, monkeys on the roof, easy access to activities (by the way Blue beach island is worth checking), proper AC, or the freedom to walk home without touching your scooter.
