Day 1: Arrival in Abu Dhabi

Touch down in the UAE capital and start your holiday by checking into your hotel, which is conveniently located in the downtown area. We recommend choosing a property along the Corniche so you can take in views of the Persian Gulf and have easy access on foot to sights like the Grand Mosque.

Spend the afternoon wandering the Corniche’s pristine public beaches and parks, stopping for photos at landmarks like the UAE Pavilion and the Capital Gate Tower, known as the “Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi”.

As the sun starts to set, make your way over to Emirates Palace to soak in the opulent interiors and grounds of Abu Dhabi’s most impressive sight.

Sit down for a relaxing dinner at one of the onsite restaurants, like Mezlai, with delicious Emirati cuisine. Make sure to see the Palace’s dome ceiling sparkle as it’s illuminated at night.

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at your hotel before heading out for a full day of sightseeing at Abu Dhabi’s cultural attractions.

First up is a tour of the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a dazzling white marble structure that’s among the world’s largest mosques. Be sure to respect the dress code and plan at least 2 hours to see the mosque’s intricate details, like the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Check this tour with transfer included.

After all that walking, relax by the pools and beaches at Saadiyat Island. If there’s time, also visit the nearby Manarat Al Saadiyat cultural district to browse Arab art.

Packing Tips & Essentials for Visiting the UAE

Planning an itinerary for Abu Dhabi and Dubai, what to wear is essential (read our guide), as both places are traditional, and to visit some iconic sights, you must be informed.

The sunny skies and desert climate of the UAE necessitate lightweight, breathable clothing, accompanied by proper sun protection. As you plan your Abu Dhabi and Dubai trip, here are some top packing tips:

Dress Code – When visiting mosques in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, it is essential to cover your legs and shoulders. Women are also advised to bring scarves. Elsewhere, dress is liberal, though it is advisable to avoid overly revealing clothes as a courtesy.

Lightweight clothing: Pack loose-fitting and light-coloured shirts, dresses, shorts, pants, skirts, and footwear. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen will keep you coolest.

Sweater or cardigan – Even in hot temperatures, heavily air-conditioned malls, hotels, and public transportation can get chilly, so it’s helpful to have a light cover-up layer on hand.

Hat – Protect your face from the sun with caps and visors. Opt for a wide-brim design for added neck protection.

Sunscreen – With intense sunshine and mostly clear skies, be sure to pack plenty of broad-spectrum, high SPF sunscreen. Reapply often.

Sunglasses – The year-round bright sunlight also means quality UV-blocking sunglasses are a must to protect your eyes.

Refillable water bottle – Stay hydrated and reduce waste by packing a reusable water bottle. Filtered water is safe to drink from most taps and water fountains.

Electrical adapter – UAE outlets fit plug types C, D, G, and M. Bring a universal travel adapter to charge your devices.

Modest swimwear – When hitting hotel pools or beaches in your free time, be respectful by opting for one piece swimsuits or tankinis paired with shorts/skirts.

Smart casual evening wear – For nights out in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, stylish jeans, sundresses or trousers paired with casual tops or shirts are appropriate.

Comfortable walking shoes – With this active itinerary, your most worn pair will be well-cushioned sneakers or sandals to log miles sightseeing.

Small backpack/purse – A compact day bag lets you easily carry essentials like sunscreen, water, camera, wallet and phone while exploring.

With breathable fabrics, sun protection, adaptable outfits and the right shoes, you’ll stay comfortable and respectful while discovering vibrant UAE culture.

Sim Card and stay connected in Abu Dhabi and Dubai

While on holiday, you may want to post online or even just check your map for directions. Well, there is not much time to go to a specialized store and purchase a SIM card, but as seasoned travellers, we always carry an e-sim card on our phones.

E-sim allows you to purchase a package for calls, data and messages to activate when you land. You will not need to switch SIM cards all the time with the chance to lose them.

One of the best e-sim for travellers is Airalo, with a competitive package and a good network that is activated worldwide. CHECK THE PACKAGES WITH BURJ MOBILE through Airalo.

Budgeting for a Week in the UAE

With its reputation for over-the-top extravagance, you might assume a week-long trip to the UAE will break the bank. But with strategic planning, you can experience Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s highlights on a moderate budget.

By choosing affordable accommodations, utilizing public transportation, limiting expensive dinners, and skipping pricey activities like helicopter tours, our mid-range one-week itinerary for two people costs around $2,500. This covered hotels, flights between the cities, attraction entry, meals, transportation, and even a desert safari.

You could easily spend $5,000+ on a luxury week indulging in 5-star hotels, fine dining, and VIP tours. Or cut costs further by staying in hostels, riding the bus, packing snacks and picnics, and sticking to free sights for under $1,500.

Backpacking Dubai & Abu Dhabi on a Budget

Backpacking in Dubai and Abu Dhabi may seem counterintuitive in these flashy Gulf capitals. However, as savvy backpackers, we assure you that a budget trip to Abu Dhabi and Dubai is possible.

You must ditch luxury hotels for affordable hostels with free activities like walking tours, cooking classes, and movie nights.

Take advantage of efficient and cost-effective public transportation like the Dubai Metro and Abu Dhabi bus network to explore.

Enjoy free entry to most major attractions like the Grand Mosque, Jumeirah Mosque, Gold Souk, and Heritage Village and walk through Dubai Creek while saving money for experiences like a desert safari or afternoon aperitif with a view.

Pack snacks and water and enjoy free parks and beaches for relaxation rather than pricey resorts. An entire week exploring Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s core attractions, including hostels, needn’t exceed $60/day.
