Where to Stay in Nusa Penida: Our 2026 Strategic Area Guide
Where you stay in Nusa Penida dictates your whole trip. We spent days exploring the island’s raw roads and construction-filled coastlines to bring you this 2026 update. Discover why we split our stay between the West and East coasts and which hotels offer a true slice of paradise.
We had to leave Bali for a bit to find the tranquillity that is often missed in chaotic Canggu and even Ubud. We found our little slice of paradise by exploring Nusa Penida for a few days, and this guide will help you find yours, too.
Where to stay in Nusa Penida? Well, there are a few areas better than others, with a range of accommodation that can satisfy any budget. We had our own itinerary of Nusa Penida and didn’t mind to drive our bike all over the island, staying in one place for four straight nights. However, going back, we might do it differently, choosing two basis across the island, to maximize the time and energy consumed to drive on such roads.
This is our personal selection of best area to stay in Nusa Penida. These are perfect for couples or a group of friends looking for adventure on the door step, but also quiet moments to chill.

👋Toti & Ale here
London couple, 45+ countries, 300+ guides. We are full-time content creators, travelling as slowmads, spending quality time in places we love the most. We run this and several other blogs from the best places in the world. We stayed in Nusa Penida five nights, before moving next door on Nusa Lembongan. We explored the whole island riding our NMax scooter, exploring well known corner and finding hidden ones.
March 7, 2026 This update reflect the change in prices (gone up +10% in the last year), roads are getting slightly better, monsoon season hit hard in between 2025 and 2026, so we updated that too. There are new tours and new guesthouses opened.
Where we stayed in Nusa Penida
Our trip to Nusa Penida was chill; we were coming from the crazy atmosphere of Canggu and the traffic of Seminyak. The last thing we wanted was car engine sounds and honks. We booked Penida Hills, and it was our slice of paradise.
The team picked us up at the pier, and we went up on the dusty hills on two motorbikes with our luggage. It was fun, though. Our bungalow was simple but essential, and completely surrounded by greenery. No sound apart from nature.
When we stayed there, the pool was still under construction, but was almost finished. From the photos, I can see the new infinity pool over the hills of Penida. The price is incredible, just 500K IDR per night.
Every morning, they served us the fluffy banana pancake. Their coffee wakes me up better than the alarm. These are the small details that made our stay one of a kind. We also rented a motorbike with them, the kindest humans. They swapped our slappy 125cc, because we couldn’t get over the hills enough, with a powerful NMax 155cc (necessary!).

Why your “Logistics Strategy” matters more than the hotel
We always try to educate travellers to do it better, not just for the glamour. Before choosing where to stay, you need to understand the Nusa Penida trap. The island is much larger than it looks on the map or Instagram shows you.
Many condense an itinerary of Nusa Penida into a mere day trip from Bali. The reality is that it is impossible to do that. That’s why staying longer, the position of your accommodation matters more than ever. Our friends warned us about that, so we didn’t make the same mistake when visiting Nusa Penida; however, there is still something we’ll do differently.
If you pick a hotel based solely on the view, you might find yourself trapped in a 3-hour commute on a bumpy scooter.
The “One Base” vs. “Two Bases” debate
If you are staying for more than 3 nights, do not stay in just one place. Instead, split your stay. This is what we didn’t know before, but want you to avoid our same mistake.
Spend 2 nights on the West Coast (near Toyapakeh/Crystal Bay) to see Kelingking and Angel’s Billabong, then move to the East Coast (near Diamond Beach) for 1 or 2 nights.
Doing so will save you roughly 4 hours of driving back and forth across the central “spine” of the island. It’s not about saving on gasoline (it only costs 10K per litre), but energy. A full Nusa Penida is exhausting and, quite frankly, hard on your back.
Forget Grab or Gojek
One thing you must know: Grab and Gojek do not work here. Like many other Indonesian islands (and places like Sri Lanka), there is a strong local taxi movement that keeps ride-sharing apps out.
One night, I had to play “shuttle bus,” driving back and forth to drop friends off one by one before finally picking up Ale from the bar. If you aren’t riding yourself, you are at the mercy of local drivers, or you’ll be walking the semi-dark Toyapakeh main road.
Which is the best area to stay in Nusa Penida?
The best area in Nusa Penida is for many around Crystal Bay because it is the most flat and developed on the island. While it is great there, we like the most around Toyapakeh Harbour.
Staying here, you’ll find restaurants, shops, a bit of nightlife and no need to rent a scooter if not for day trips.
If you are seeking peace and sunrise views, Atuh Beach on the island’s east side offers the best options, but with limited access to facilities.
1. Toyapakeh & Ped (The Strategic Hub)
If you are visiting the island for the first time, we suggest staying here. It was perfect for us. Close enough to the port and the only active town on the island. There are several restaurants (warungs) open till late, and an easy drive (there is an actual road) to many places to have fun at night.
Virgin Beach restaurant is one of the coolest in the area, right on the beach, with your toes in the sand. Warung Nikmat is surrounded by palm trees and serves the best lamb nasi goreng. Staying in Toypakeh we even got the luxury of having an ice cream at the usual mart while staying here. Despite most of the East Coast, here, WiFi works decently, and 5G with Telekomsel is spotty, but does the job.
Staying here means you are 30-40 minutes from the West Coast sights, but 1 hour+ from the East Coast.
While we loved having dinner in town and dancing at Penida Colada (highly recommend the fire show and live music!), driving back up to the hills at night is an adventure in itself.
There are no streetlights, and the roads are shared with “mystery animals.” We spotted several stray dogs sleeping right in the middle of the road.
If you aren’t a confident rider, stick to the main Toyapakeh road or stay somewhere within walking distance of the beach clubs.
2. Crystal Bay Area (The Sunset Seekers)
Another great area we suggest checking out is Crystal Bay. Surely it is perfect for sunset and still has some restaurants and warungs. We drove there at night to see what the vibes were, but since it was off-season, some shops were shut down. During the day, it was much more open, and mostly diving and snorkelling places.
To be fair, it is much quieter in the harbour than in Toyapakeh. However, it’s the only place where you can easily walk to a swimmable beach for sunset without a long trek.

Where to watch sunset in Nusa Penida?
Our favourite places to watch sunset in Nusa Penida, easy to skim, with a map and directions.
3. The East Side / Pejukut
I would stay here only if I had limited time on the island and wanted to see it all. The east side of Nusa Penida, and specifically the Pejukut area, is ideal if you want to be the first at Diamond Beach. Believe me, after 9 AM it’s already packed, and sometimes you have to queue with guided tours to get into the parking lot.
The area is very raw and remote, so do not expect to have warungs open till late. You’ll consider this zone of Nusa Penida on a hop-on, hop-off tour, staying in multiple areas. Stay here for one night if you want to see the sunrise at the Thousand Islands viewpoint without waking up at 4:00 AM to drive across the island.

Things to know before booking your Nusa Penida Hotel
Nusa Penida is the largest of the three Nusa islands, but it is also the least developed. We learned the hard way that a “4-star” booking here doesn’t always mean the same thing as it does in Seminyak or Ubud.
Before you hit “book,” here is the unfiltered truth about the accommodation scene in 2026:

1. The “Saltwater Shower” Reality
Don’t be surprised if your hair feels “crunchy” after a shower. Many guesthouses and mid-range bungalows on the island use brackish water (a mix of fresh and salt water) because fresh water is a scarce resource here, or at least some areas aren’t served by clean water. If you have sensitive skin (like Ale) or need fresh water, you’ll likely need to stay in high-end resorts like Adiwana Warnakali or check recent reviews specifically for “freshwater showers.”
2. The Sound of 2026: Construction
Penida is growing fast. When we stayed at Penida Hills, the pool was a work in progress (it looks amazing now, though!). Even though they were respectful, and our time there wasn’t disrupted by the work.
Anyway, this is common across the island. Before booking, check if there is an active construction site next door. In these developing areas, the sound of hammers at 7:00 AM is a common “alarm clock.”
3. Limited Facilities & “Island Time”
Even though Instagram makes Penida look like a luxury paradise, the infrastructure is raw, the wifi is slow, and cafes and beach bars are still developing the scene.
- Power Cuts: Short blackouts are common.
- WiFi: If you are a “Slowmad” like us, stick to the Toyapakeh/Ped area. Outside of that hub, 5G is spotty, and hotel WiFi can be near-useless for video calls.
- ATMs: They are notoriously unreliable. Always withdraw enough cash in Bali or Nusa Lembongan before you cross the channel.

4. Safety & The Night Drive Warning
There are almost no streetlights on the island. We spent our evenings in town at Penida Colada, but the drive back up the hills at night was intense. We had to be extremely cautious as animals—from mystery shadows to stray dogs—often sleep right in the middle of the road.
5. Backpacks vs Suitcases: Choose Wisely.
We travelled with backpacks, which was a lifesaver. Because we travelled light, we managed to get our bags on the scooters and head up the dusty hills to our bungalow without drama.
Warning: If you have hard-shell suitcases, do not expect to balance them on a bike. You will need to hire a private car/driver.
Be prepared: drivers on Nusa Penida know they have a monopoly, and prices are significantly higher than in Bali or Lombok.
How long staying in Nusa Penida?
We suggest staying at least 3 nights in Nusa Penida. Taking into consideration that the day you arrive and depart, there will be very few things you can do, this leaves about 2 days of full exploration.
Within 2 full days in Nusa Penida, you will be able to squeeze in the best highlights – Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, snorkelling or diving with Mantas, see plenty of sunsets and even venture further into hidden gems such as Tembeling Beach and forest.

Where to stay in Nusa Penida near the port
Is Nusa Penida good for families?
Yes, Nusa Penida is ideal for families looking for safe environments and quiet life. The distances between things might be an obstacle, but organising your journey well and staying around the ferry port, maybe at La Roja Bungalows, can save money and make your holiday safer for kids.
Which are the best hotels for couples in Nusa Penida?
Slowly but steadily, Nusa Penida is developing cute spots, so Couples are assured of having the right balance between intimacy and cosiness. Whether you are looking to impress your other half or living a romantic honeymoon off the coasts of Bali, you are in luck. Stay at Adiwana Warnakali Resort or Semabu Hills Hotel Nusa Penida for the best stay in Nusa Penida.

Glamping in Nusa Penida
The best part of visiting Nusa Penida is that, even though Instagram made this place famous, and it’s slowly changing. The island and the businesses are developing a coutious side of tourism, which we appreciated. You’ll easily notice it with more places exploring yoga, pilates or full centres with retreat and isolation from the mass. A guide about where to stay in Nusa Penida, without mentioning secluded spots, will be nothing.
That’s why if you are up for a romantic, peaceful escape, or looking for honeymoon destination inspiration, this is the right place.
We have highlighted two places that are the best for glamping in Nusa Penida: Tropical Glamping and Diamond Beach – Cliff Side Edge.

Where to stay nearby Main Attractions
If you’re keen on exploring Nusa Penida’s famous spots without the hassle of renting a scooter, staying within the strip that runs from Buyuk Harbour to Prapat Beach is ideal. This area is perfect if you prefer organised tours to get around.
The main road here is lined with grocery stores, cafes, bars, and restaurants, making it easy to walk around and get everything you need.
One of our best decisions was to stay here for five days. While we adored the island’s beauty, we realised that Nusa Penida is more enjoyable with a scooter if you want to see everything it has to offer. However, if you prefer a more relaxed pace, this strip offers everything within a comfortable walking distance.
Best Places to Stay for Nightlife
Nusa Penida isn’t exactly known for its nightlife, but there are still some fun spots to check out. If you’re looking for some evening entertainment, staying close to Toyapakeh is a good idea. This area has a handful of bars and restaurants that come alive after dark, offering a great place to unwind and enjoy the island vibe.
