Honest Ybor City Tampa Guide: Cigars, Sandwiches, and Late-Night Pizza
This Ybor City guide maps a walkable route through cigar shops, La Segunda Bakery, Columbia Restaurant, pizza stops and music venues, starting near Coppertail Brewery. It is built for travelers who want local history, atmosphere and a better plan than random bar hopping.
We spent five days exploring Tampa. We ended up visiting Ybor City three separate times. We saw the daytime historic charm. We sat in our car during a massive rainstorm, eating takeout. We also walked the noisy streets at midnight. This area constantly shifts its personality. Many people wonder if they should even bother visiting this neighbourhood.
We wanted to figure out the reality behind the hype. We did not want another generic tourist walk. We walked the side streets. We dodged the famous local chickens. We ate heavy food. This Ybor City guide comes from our real experiences. Ybor City offers a strange mix of old-school Florida history and intense nightlife.

Our Three Different Ybor City Experiences
Ybor city visit will not fit in your Tampa itinerary, if you don’t plan it ahead. This part of the city is about 15 minutes driving away following the Channelside Drive, but feels miles away if trafficked. Our first visit happened on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
We started our trip slightly outside the main tourist bubble. We parked our car right outside Coppertail Brewery, which by the way has a great summer hale, Florida inspired.
We loved the street art painted on the brewery walls. We drank a cold craft beer and ate a juicy burger. Then it was time to walk our way to Ybor City. The Florida humidity hit us as soon as we stepped back outside, but we felt ready to explore.

Coppertail Brewery to Ybor Itinerary
It seems that the walkway from Coppertail Brewery to Ybor City is the preferred itinerary for everyone. We didn’t know, as it fit naturally within our post-lunch walk. It is just a 30 minute flat walk. We took about 50 minutes because we took photos and checked some places in between.
While you can do the opposite way (Coppertail first, then walk into Ybor), we strongly suggest starting at the brewery. You can easily walk on 3rd Avenue and take the passageway through traditional avenues.
We walked past old cottage houses with private driveways. It felt exactly like walking through a classic American movie set. For us, on our first time in the US, it was the right way to get to Ybor City. The quiet residential streets provide a massive contrast to the loud bars ahead. Turning on the junction with 21st Street, you’ll walk toward the north.
On this street, you’ll find another great stop: Gasparilla Distillery & Cocktail Bar. Three blocks away, we stopped for some photos at the iconic Columbia Restaurant. If you plan to eat there, book your table in advance, as we tried two weeks before our visit to Tampa and were fully booked.
Or try your luck on a walk-in. Turning left at the Columbia Restaurant, you are entering Ybor City. We loved seeing the traditional Trams crossing roads here, which is one of the best photos from Tampa you can take.

Can You Walk Around Ybor City During the Day?
Yes, you absolutely can walk around Ybor City during the day. The daytime vibe focuses heavily on history. We saw the famous Ybor chickens casually crossing the road. It was funny and iconic in the meantime.
They completely stop traffic, and nobody seems to mind. We stopped to take photos in front of massive, colourful murals painted on old brick walls that welcome you to Ybor City.
The streets feel calm and very safe in the sunlight. We walked along the route, under an archway of 7th Avenue and in awe because of the stunning architecture, totally different from the rest of Tampa.

Our Ybor City itinerary Map
The following map shows the exact walking route we took to explore Ybor City as first timers. All the stops we did, places worth checking out. Keep it handy and good for offline use – It runs through Google Maps.
Exploring the Cigar culture in Ybor city
You cannot ignore the cigar culture here. It’s impossible, every three shops one is a cigar making factory and adjacent shop. You will smell the rich, sweet tobacco everywhere you walk. I don’t like the smell of cigars, though, so I easily avoided some bars.
While saying that, I totally loved the culture, the craft of making it from fresh leaves, which you can easily and for free see from the shop windows.
We decided to do some Ybor City cigar shop hopping. Ale’s father highly appreciated it. We walked into several small shops along the main avenue. Never bought cigars in our life, so had to get a guide through by a local owner. It was a fantastic experience, and we learned the whole backstory, culture and modern manufacturing. It was an essential tour, and for free!
We stood outside on the sidewalk and enjoyed watching the window, where cigar making was taking place right in front of us. The rollers move their hands incredibly fast, cutting and shaping the leaves with pure precision.

Best Cigar Shops in Ybor City
We felt intimidated as we don’t smoke. However, we wanted a unique gift from Tampa. Looking for the best Ybor City cigar lounge for beginners, we were more guided by the rollers right in front of the window. The staff inside Tabanero Cigars love explaining the different wrappers and blends.
You do not need to be an expert. Just ask for a mild starter cigar. You can sit back in a leather chair and soak in the heavy, earthy aroma. We just bought it and honestly felt the 1K review and 4.8 rating on Google was pretty accurate for the experience.
Another place to check out is definitely Tampa Sweethearts Cigar Co. It’s a family-run business in a nice yellow building on the opposite side of the main strip. On 6th Avenue. There is a huge parking lot next to it with pay as you go, which is perfect to stay closer to the centre of Ybor city.
This isn’t your typical cigar stop. The atmosphere is more laid back, you’ll relax even if you don’t smoke, but they actually love talking about their rolled tobacco. It’s more of a boutique cigar shop than a street one.

WEEKEND IN TAMPA BAY

TAMPA RIVERWALK GUIDE
Food Fails and Massive Wins
Our second visit brought terrible weather. No street parking available, as it was the weekend, so many people flock here for the atmosphere, so we parked at Palm Garage FERNANDO. We enjoyed a nice walk initially, but then the sky turned black. It started pouring rain. We changed our plans immediately.
We sprinted back to our vehicle and drove straight to La Segunda Bakery. This historic bakery opened back in 1915. It was on our list of things to do in Tampa, but honestly, it will fit in your plan if you get a walk to Ybor City, as it’s way out from downtown.

Is La Segunda Bakery Ybor Worth It?
Yes, La Segunda is absolutely worth the stop. There are just some standing tables to eat in this active bakery. So, we grabbed our food to go. We sat in our rental car and ate while the rain smashed against the windshield.
We tried incredibly hard not to make a mess with the flaky crust. The bread was perfectly crunchy outside and soft inside. The bakers still use a palmetto leaf to create the signature split on top of the bread. It’s true Cuban tradition, tough.
It’s definitely the best Cuban Sandwich in Ybor City. Eating in the car was messy, but the sandwich tasted fantastic. Crumbs fell all over the seats, but we did not care. The mix of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, and mustard works perfectly. It serves as an excellent lunch option when you need something fast, hot, and incredibly filling.
The Nighttime Transformation
Our third visit happened purely at night. We just passed by for a quick look after dinner. The energy completely shifts. The quiet historic streets turn into a parade of loud muscle cars and heavy motorcycles.
We saw bright neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement. The sidewalks fill with loud groups heading to clubs and bars. The smell of cheap beer replaces the daytime scent of fresh cigars.

Is Ybor City Safe at Night for Couples?
We felt very safe walking around. Ybor City for couples is highly entertaining if you enjoy people-watching, some good music, and big pints of American beers. The area feels fun and very active at night.
Police officers patrol the main intersections constantly. We held hands and navigated through the busy sidewalks without any issues. The atmosphere is wild and concentrated mainly on 7th Avenue. Just as you know, New York New York pizza is open till late.
What Changes After 10 PM in Ybor?
The historic vibe disappears completely after 10 PM. The street becomes a massive nightlife strip. The bass pumps out of every open door. The main drag of 7th Avenue feels totally fine for walking.
The darker, unlit side streets feel a bit less comfortable late at night. You should stick to the well-lit areas where the large crowds gather.
Music Venues and Late-Night Eats
You have many options for a Ybor City brewery and cigar crawl. You can also easily enjoy Ybor City without drinking. We spent our evening exploring street life. You will find a Ybor City live music venue option for every specific taste.
We heard heavy goth music coming from one dark, crowded club. We heard mainstream pop pouring out of another brightly lit venue. Intimate acoustic sets play in the smaller courtyard bars.
You can just walk down the street and pick whatever sound matches your current mood. The sheer variety keeps the walk interesting.
Our favourite ones are:
- Hotwax: More light live music, jazz, and a Cuban mix.
- Show Bar: More of a disco club, neon lights.
- The Dirty Shame: Some snooker, more beer and burger than music.
Best Pizza in Ybor City After Bars
You will inevitably get hungry after walking past all these venues. We actively searched for late-night food. Many locals pointed us toward the quick pizza shops. You need something heavy and greasy to soak up the energy from your walk.

Is New York New York Pizza Ybor Worth It?
Yes, it hits the spot perfectly at midnight or midday. New York New York Pizza serves giant, greasy slices that taste amazing after a long night out. It definitely earns the title of the best pizza in Ybor City after bars.
You stand on the sidewalk, fold your massive slice to keep the cheese from dripping, and watch the heavy motorcycles roar past. It is cheap, fast, and exactly what you need at 1 AM.

Planning Your Trip
We want to answer the final logistical questions. We know planning a trip requires practical details. We learned a lot by visiting the area in three completely different ways.
