Weekend in Tampa: Ultimate 2-Day Itinerary (2026 Guide)
Craving a Tampa weekend escape? Our 2-day itinerary packs Ybor’s cigar vibes, Hillsborough paddle boarding, Alafia hikes & manatee spotting. From our Florida first-timer lens, here’s budgets, maps & lobster roll musts.
We almost bailed on our Tampa weekend itinerary. The rain hit right after landing, and we were stuck, fumbling, and having trouble with our rental at the airport. The traffic clogged the way to the Westin, but we knew deep down it was gonna be one of the best weekends ever in the US. Believe me I didn’t think it was so fun, there are so many things to do in Tampa Bay!
The next day, with the sky still moody, we were paddleboarding on the Hillsborough River. The skyline started to pop out through the morning mist, and damn if that didn’t kick off the perfect 2 days in Tampa.
That Cuban sandwich at La Segunda Bakery in Ybor city later? Life-changing greasy perfection, but I regret inhaling two before the Alafia River State Park hike—those 50-minute drive delays plus a full belly made the first trail feel brutal.
This Tampa getaway packs our real screw-ups—like skipping the free TECO tram for downtown and wasting gas on that Mustang rental—plus hits like Coppertail Brewery burgers and Edison’s duck that’ll linger.

Is Tampa worth visiting for the weekend?
Yes, we found Tampa Bay a very, surprisingly vibrant city. We stayed a little more than just Saturday and Sunday; and can clearly say that the atmosphere changes drastically (for the good) in the weekend.
This city on the gulf offers a perfect blend of urban energy, outdoor adventures, and cultural experiences. Renting a car was the best choice.
We could get around easily, and combine more activities in a single weekend. Tampa is perfect if you are interested in history, nature, or nightlife.
Tampa weekend itinerary MAP

Day 1: History & Waterfront
One of the things we loved the most is that Tampa airport is so close to the city centre. Within minutes we were from the terminal to our hotel – The Westin – and renting a car was easy too.
We just had to familiarise ourselves with the USA roads, as it was our first time in the country. By the way, if you are curious about how was our first trip with Virgin Atlantic was, here is our review.

Day 1 – Morning
When I woke up in the morning, my first thought was about a great cup of coffee, so we headed to Armature Works. This is one of the renowned spaces in Tampa, and opens very early. At 8 AM I was already with my hot coffee cup from Buddy Brew Coffee. Ale got a pastry, because skipped breakfast in the hotel.
We were there so early that we could watch people setting up the shops. The pink flower shop truck is so unique, that we decide to return later in the day. With just a few others around we enjoyed this trendy spot and the repurposed factory architecture.

Switch your coffee place for a posher one!
Honestly the best coffee place in Tampa bay. Oxford Exchange was one of the highlight of our Tampa itinerary and we felt we were actually in London.

Late in the morning, we walked outside. The weather wasn’t great, but the sun was about to show up. Afterall we are in the sunshine state, isn’t it? Actually you must know that Tampa has one of the Guinness records for the longest consecutives days of sun – about 200.
We rented our paddleboards at Urban Kai (cost $25 per hour), and went for a wakeup enjoyable trip on the Hillsborough River. Paddleboarding offers a unique perspective on Tampa’s skyline and is a great way to enjoy the city’s outdoor lifestyle.

Day 1 in Tampa – Lunch Time
For lunch we went through the core of Tampa. Just driving through Ybor city, we had to place it on our map. Before that we headed to Coppertail Brewery for lunch. My burger was one of a kind, and I truly get why Americans know their burgers now.
This brewery is one of the most popular, and were attracted there by their advertised over 200 brewed beers. I went, of course, for the Florida Inspired Lager. Quite light, but refreshing.
The pub has a clear view over the factory, and it’s themed as a sailing ship. They even sell their own merchandise.

Walk through Ybor city
We left the car in the parking lot at Coppertail Brewery, and walked our way to Ybor city. Just 10 minutes from some of the most traditional and oldest districts of Tampa Bay. Colourful houses, curated lawn and big muscle cars on the driveway. Sounds so USA, doesn’t it?
Anyway, Ybor City is the historic district of Tampa, known for its Spanish and Cuban vibes, cigar shops, and vintage streetcars. We watched people rolling fresh cigars in the shop windows, and went through the brick lined buildings transformed into apartments from old cigar factories.
Our after lunch walk was mostly about enjoying the atmosphere.

What to do in Tampa in the afternoon and at night for day one
The afternoon activity is indoor, exploring one of the most interesting aquariums we have visited so far. All in one place you can see sharks, alligators, and species that are native to Florida.
We are not very fond of aquariums and zoos, but when there is one devoted to helping conservation projects, we are happy to explore more. Tampa Florida Aquarium is a great addition to an itinerary for families.

If you don’t feel comfortable to visit the Aquarium of Tampa, doesn’t matter how ethical it is, we suggest checking out the wonderful Tampa Museum. We passed by while paddling our board on the river, and already from there the futuristic structure was a blast.
Inside the contemporary artworks are one of a kind, and we never experience such. Ticket is steep to be fair, $25 per person (Purchase online here!) but worth it!
In the evening we made our way to Edison: Food and Drink Lab. Not a secret that everyone was suggesting it. Surely they’ll run for Michelin Star very soon. While we were very tired by the day out, the food truly stand shout. I was so into the duck dish, that Ale almost steal it from me.
It was so flavorful that it’s still on my palate! After dinner we headed back to Armature works, for a drink and some music. The venue changes from day to night. Walked Up to the rooftop bar at M Bird. This place is so popular, and we were lucky to have a table reservation.
After a cocktail or two, it was time to head back to the hotel. Afterall, day two is always the most intense.

Day 2: Outdoors & Nightlife
On day two you’ll focus more on Tampa downtown. But, we will also give you a hint for a hidden gem, not so far from the city. There is so much to do, and promise you’ll get the best photos of your two days in Tampa.
Day 2 in Tampa – Morning
Drive to Alafia River State Park for hiking or mountain biking. It took a bit longer than expected to get there. Traffic in Tampa on the weekend was brutal, so better accounting for it and plan accordingly. We thought were smart on getting up early, but were wrong. Got traffic by people going to work using the freeway.
The park is about 50 minutes from Tampa Bay city centre, but it ended up being one hour and a half with a takeaway coffee stop in the middle. However, we weren’t wrong. Alafia River State Park lives up to the hype as one of the most popular parks in Florida.
There are over 200 miles of scenic trails, and you can actually see wildlife. I was so pumped to spot gators in the wild that almost forgot the rest. After much walking, we spotted one and stopped our trail just to get the perfect shot. Almost impossible though.
Considering the fact that the entry to this park is only $5 per vehicle (2026 verified), it was one of the most affordable activities we did in our weekend in Tampa.
Also we noticed and appreciated something. To our surprise there were many RVs parked. No wanders we thought about how beautiful could be if we had our RV or campervan overnight.

Manatee Centre
On the way back to Tampa we went to the Manatee Viewing Centre. This is in a strategic location near Apollo Beach, by the Energy power plant.
The warm water released into the bay by the energy factory attracts manatees. The boardwalk of the viewing centre is free, and you can also spot manta rays playing. It was interesting.
Lunch time day two | Our perfect weekend in Tampa
We drove back to Tampa downtown for lunch time, and now it was for a different spot. Outdoor. The sun was shining, live music was on and about 20 stalls selling different products. Sounds like a paradise.
Being in Florida, we had to try some tacos. Everyone was suggesting it in our DMs (Check our Instagram for visual stories from Tampa)

The romantic sunset cruise on day 2
A romantic walk on the riverside was all we needed after a fantastic lunch. We had to reach the area of Tampa Convention Centre, this is proper downtown.
There we had a unique activity booked up to spice up our Tampa Itinerary. The sunset cruise was fantastic, we sailed through the Seddon Channel and Sparkman Channel.
Saw the millionaires’ houses, learned a bit more of Tampa history, and even saw the Navy Military base far from us, of course.
The sunset couldn’t be better. This is surely one of the most romantic experiences in Tampa we had on our weekend.

Dinner places for last night in Tampa
After such a lovely afternoon we had to complete the day in the best way possible. Couldn’t leave the USA without the famous lobster roll. So, we headed to Anchor and Brine, 100 metres from the dock.
The first bite on the lobster roll was divine. You must try!

Best places to stay in Tampa bay
Depending on your itinerary, several accommodations in Tampa fit the bill for a perfect weekend getaway.
We stayed at the Westin Hotel, which is on the way to St. Pete’s and Clearwater. We didn’t have time to get there and enjoy the powdery beaches, but if you are after it, there is a nice small beach next to the hotel parking lot or just 2 minute drive away at Whiskey Joe’s Bar & Grill.
Other accommodations we suggest in Tampa are:
The Nook – It’s a budget-friendly studio flat with all the necessities by Armature Works. Staying here, you’ll have easy access to downtown Tampa and the Riverwalk.
Hampton Inn is one of the most popular hotels in Tampa, right on East Kennedy Boulevard. There is a Free Tram (street car) passing by just outside the hotel, which takes you to the major parts of Tampa in no time.
The rooftop pool has the best view of downtown Tampa, and to be fair, prices are acceptable for such a service. CHECK THIS HOTEL.
Home2 Suites – It’s more upscale but is a top place to stay in Tampa with a staggering 9.1 reviews rating. The rooftop pool is one of a kind, and if you can spend a little more for 2 days in Tampa we suggest staying here.
Nice rooms, with a view of downtown; you’re still in the centre of the action, in the cool, vibrant Channel District, metres away from Sparkman Wharf.
Tampa Weekend Costs (Our Real Spend: ~$850/couple)
Our 2-day Tampa adventure for two people, totalled ~$850 excluding flights—affordable vs Orlando or Miami.
You can save up money: Our car rental unlocked extras like Alafia or Manate Centre Viewpoint, but costs over $200 on the budget for 4 days. If staying only downtown, the tram suffices. Food skewed indulgent; budget $600 for basics.
| Category | Cost (USD, 2 ppl) |
|---|---|
| Stay (Westin, 2 nights) | $350 |
| Eat Out (meals/coffee x8) | $286 |
| Attractions (aquarium, parks, cruise) | $165 |
| Car Rental + Fuel/Parking | $220 |
| Total | ~$1,021 |
How to get around Tampa

We rented a car, but it was mostly a vanity thing for our first trip to the US. Also, we planned to stay a little longer in Tampa Bay and explore the area besides the city limits. We drove everywhere and were able to explore about 60 miles south to Alafia State Park.
To be honest, from our experience you can spend a lovely weekend in Tampa without a car, but it’s limited. Like many other US cities, distances are oltrageous, and of course public transport is deficient. There is no Metro in Tampa. We rented our car at Tampa Airport, comparing the prices on Discover Cars. Our deal was fantastic and we weren’t constrained to Downtown Tampa.
With less than £200 we booked a car, and then got upgraded on the spot for the American dream, a shiny white Ford Mustang.
Anyway, if you only want to explore downtown Tampa, there is excellent public transport. The tram passing through nevralgic hotspots it’s free, and will take you back in time passing through Ybor city.

Food you must try in Tampa
Food was the centrepiece of our trip to Tampa. We are still dreaming about the lobster roll, the duck in special sauce, and the fried seafood at Whiskey Joe’s Bar & Grill. All these experiences offer authentic flavors that reflect Tampa’s diverse culinary scene.
These are some of the all time, no brain, food you must try in Tampa:
- Cuban Sandwich: Try the original at La Segunda Bakery.
- Lobster Roll: The one at Anchor and Brine is a must-try.
- Craft Beer & Burgers: Coppertail Brewery serves excellent craft beer with juicy burgers.
- Seafood Platters: Whiskey Joe’s Bar & Grill offers amazing fried seafood.
- Spanish Cuisine: Columbia Restaurant, the oldest Spanish restaurant in the U.S., is a must-visit.
Space up for a Cuban sandwich in Tampa
Shout out to La Secunda Bakery for the best Cuban Sandwich in Tampa bay. Little story short, on our flight to Tampa from London, I watched a movie. Swear without knowing the topic or the location. I was just caught by the name of it. The Chef, featuring Jon Faverau and of course Florida!
Well, after that movie, trying the popular Cuban Sandwich at La Segunda Bakery, the most famous in town, was an experience on it’s own. I’ve got full understanding of every piece of history covered in ingredient, precision and passion. You should watch it before visiting Tampa Bay.

What to do at night in Tampa in the weekend
We scratch the surface, that’s why we are planning a return to Tampa for a longer stay. The nightlife blast and we loved our drinks and the vibes at Armature Works and Sparkman Wharf. We searched a lot through social media about which were the perfect spots, actually romantic spots for couples in Tampa Bay.
It was very hard to find any place that didn’t turn into a disco club, or means opening late at 11 PM – well when we were already asleep. We had a couple of drinks in each location, and actually grabbed food at Armature Works. DJ at this last, and live music at Sparkman and Wharf.
Also we had one special night, where didn’t check the bill! We drove a Yacht in the bay of Tampa, had dinner, dance under the stars and returned to the hotel happier than ever. We booked Starship almost blind. It turned to be one of the best sunset by the boat, great food (buffet – we had also some specials because of the high package), and free flaw drinks.
