Village vs Cheow Lan Lake: how to structure your trip

Khao Sok is really two destinations in one, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake. Khao Sok Village is the inland base near the park headquarters, where the hostels, riverside cottages and jungle trekking trails are – it’s where you’ll sleep on arrival and departure.

Cheow Lan Lake is a different world about an hour away by road and longtail boat from the Ratchaprapha Dam pier, and it’s the only place you’ll find the floating bungalows, towering karsts and the 2D1N lake tour.

Our take, from having done both: don’t choose one over the other. Base yourself in the village for a night or two to trek, visit the elephant sanctuary and go on a night safari, then head to the lake for the 2D1N floating bungalow trip.

That combination is what turns a good trip into the 3-day, 2-night itinerary below – and if you can only fit in one half, make it the lake.

Is Khao Sok worth visiting?

Yes, Khao Sok is worth visiting, and one of the most underrated places in Thailand. Being one of the less touristy spots in the south of the country has its good sides, as you will get fewer people around.

However, Khao Sok is one of the most memorable experiences we have travelling in southeast Asia, and also one of the easiest places for first-time backpackers.

The chill vibes, plenty of activities, direct contact with nature and budget-friendly options make Khao Sok one of the best destinations in Thailand.

Day 1: Arrive to Khao Sok

You’ll definitely feel the ambience, calm, relaxing unique. Everything is serene in this national park tucked away from the major touristy destinations.

We chose to stay midway between the park entrance and the main town, which provided a peaceful atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle.

Our resort (Khao Sok Riverside Cottages) had a beautiful natural pool, just next by the river, fed by the rapids. The restaurant was the perfect spot to overlook the river, kayakers and wildlife.

Afternoon: Explore the Town and Relax

Spend your afternoon exploring Khao Sok village. The quintesseltial experience, might sounds unreal, and actually we compare this little village to the mountainous hamlet of Pai. Well, without the hippies, loud music and drugs. However, the town is lively as you need, with some local bars and restaurants open till late. It is often recognized as one of thecheapest backpackers’ hotspots in Thailand.

If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bike and start your DIY tour of the countryside, as we did. This is a fantastic way to get a feel for the area and its natural beauty.

Evening: Dinner at Khao Sok Riverside Cottages

For dinner, head to Khao Sok Riverside Cottages. The food here is arguably the best we’ve had in Thailand. All the products are produced in local gardens to sustain families around.

It is a small community that lives mostly in tourism, and it’s beautiful to see how they help each other. The eco-sustainable property is cosy and nestled in nature, providing a perfect end to your first day.

Day 2: Visit a Elefant Sanctuary

The second day is jam-packed with adventures; we suggest you book your Elephant Sanctuary visit as soon as you plan this itinerary. We debated a lot on going or not, as not often you find sustainable facilities.

This Ethical Elephant Sanctuary was eye-opening, as they use tourism to take back Elephants from the log Camp. During your visit, you will prepare food and feed the elephants, walk on their side, and get with them to the river.

One of the things we loved the most is the fact that they don’t force elephants to do anything, and you, the visitor, must just be company within their natural environment.

Afternoon: Kayak adventure on the River

The second day in Khao Sok is filled with adventures, and the next one is on a kayak down the slow rapids of Sok River. The calm waters were very relaxing, and you will spot wildlife as soon you leave the bridge in town.

The afternoon of the second day in Khao Sok is on a Kayak on the rapids of the Sok River. The water is gentile, and you’ll spot wildlife as you go – Monkeys, snakes and more.

It is one of the most budget-friendly activities in Khao Sok, even if you are a backpacker. At the time of our visit, it started raining, so keep a dry bag with you. The atmosphere was unique, and we stopped for a coffee by the river, which is still in our memories.

You will be in the heart of Khao Sok National Park. If you want to book a similar experience, make sure you check this activity.

Evening: Night Jungle Safari

The day wasn’t yet over, and I don’t know if we were ready or not but pumped enough for another activity. Promise the last of the day!

We went on a night jungle Safari in Khao Sok National Park. In order to do this activity, you must hire a local guide, which will take care of everything during the visit, from tickets to spot wild life.

Day 3: Cheow Lan Lake and Floating Bungalows

The third day is the one that takes the best of the trip to Khao Sok. Pack light bags, and leave the fluff at your hotel or hostel in town.

You will spend a two-day, one-night tour on Cheow Lan Lake. The tour started with a scenic boat ride across the emerald waters of the lake, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. We arrived at our floating bungalow before lunch, so we had time to catch up and relax while watching boats pass by.

Our bungalow was a simple double room on the floating deck, with its own private bathroom and welcome hot water. Don’t expect much beyond that, though: electricity is limited, and phone signal is weak, only really catching a bar near the restaurant area, where the communal Wi-Fi lives too. Every passing longtail sends a gentle wake through the cabin, and we spotted the odd cockroach out on deck, though never inside our room, which is just part of staying somewhere this remote. We spent the afternoon on our own private deck, kayaking around the bay and reading before a home-cooked dinner, and an early night, ready for sunrise the next morning.

If you’re still weighing up where to stay on the lake, our guide to the Khao Sok floating bungalows breaks down the options by price and comfort.

Afternoon: Explore the Lake and Caves

Booking a two-day—one-night experience in Khao Sok Lake will give you access to many activities. The first of all is going on a boat trip around the lake, spotting caves, and, depending on your tour, even getting into one of them.

For us, that meant paddling into Coral Cave and Pra Kai Petch (Diamond) Cave rather than the more famous Nam Talu. We visited in the dry season and never crossed paths with a single leech, though conditions (and which caves are open) can change depending on rainfall, so it’s worth asking your guide before you go.

Our tour (this one) also included a sunset wildlife watching from the boat, all around the lake.

Sunset at Khao Sok Lake during our Khao Sok itinerary

Evening: Sunset and Stargazing

Most of our memories from the floating bungalow in Khao Sok are because of sunrise and sunset. We made sure to witness both, and we suggest to don’t miss it.

The lake has very few settlements, and the nearby town is very far, so no lights are disturbing you giving plain clearance to watch the stars.

The sunset over Cheow Lan Lake is a sight to behold. The sky painted with hues of orange, pink, and purple is a memory we cherish. There is not much to do at night there, but you can make friends and talk until late, enjoying stargazing.

Sunrise in Khao Sok National Park sunrise incredible colours of the sky

Day 4: Sunrise and Return to Khao Sok

We woke up that morning with the sole intent of enjoying one of the best sunrises ever. We set the alarm just before 6 am (Check when the sunrise is). The sounds of the wild in the distance, unique colours, still water is impressive. We spent about one hour on the deck just admiring the glory.

The day before, we took a kayak (included in your stay), ready for the morning, then went for a round on the calm water. From some floating bungalows, you can also see wild elephants come for a bath.

Paddle around the lake

Usually facilities includes in the price a paddle boarding or the kayak. Take advantage of it. We wrote an interesting article about the best-floating bungalows in Khao Sok, and you should have a look at it and book as soon as your trip is confirmed. It gets sold out very quickly.

Bimba enjoying the refreshing river in Khao Sok

Afternoon: Refreshing bath in the Sok River

We spent a bit more than 5 days in Khao Sok, so our days became routine. We had some work done (Wi-Fi was really fast at the Riverside Cottages), and then after lunch, we took a refreshing bath at the river beach behind the corner.

Day 5: Take the bike and explore Khao Sok

While in Khao Sok, one of my favourite activities was to take a bike to town, sip a nice hot latte at Hugcup, and watch backpackers jump down to the track to start their adventure. You can rent a bike very cheaply, and some accommodations also offer it for free.

Afternoon: Viewpoint by town

If you still have time to enjoy the view, we suggest going to the viewpoint next to town. It is a gorgeous way to end your Khao Sok itinerary, and understand the landscape made of rice fields, private gardens, rubber palms and Karst.

Take this time for any last-minute exploration or shopping in the town. Pick up some souvenirs or local handicrafts to remember your journey.

Practical tips and advice visiting Khao Sok

This trip to Khao Sok was truly incredible; The magic of this place stands in its authenticity, but we get that if it’s your first time, you might need some directions.

It isn’t a touristy place, so don’t expect it to be crowded. Places, eateries, and tours are not often crowded, which is good for slow travellers like us.

However, if you want to follow this itinerary and go for a two-day-one-night adventure on Cheow Lan Lake, you must act fast, as the activity gets fully booked quickly, and you must secure the best spot within weeks in advance. We saw many people at the harbour waiting for tours, emphasising the need for early planning.

Take plenty of mosquito repellant from 7/11; it is cheap but really covers you while in the jungle. Bring or buy a dry bag and a torch lamp.

We bought those at Khao Sok Market before boarding our 2d1n adventure on the lake but got acceptable tourist prices.

How to get to Khao Sok

Getting to Khao Sok was easier than we expected. To be honest, we were tricked by online reviews regarding bus transportation, the need to change at Surat Thani, and the lack of reliable service.

The reality is that getting from Bangkok to Khao Sok is very easy, and getting from Phuket is even easier, and all the effort is worth it!

You can reach Khao Sok by taking an overnight train or bus from Bangkok (Check the train schedule here). Arriving in the morning at Surat Thani, you will be taken into a small van/bus, passing by local villages. In about 2 hours, you will get to the bus station, a short distance from the entrance to the National Park.

We suggest you book this Van (about $7) over the bus, as it is faster and costs just $1 more than the traditional bus.

When you book your accommodation, check with them if they offer a pickup at the bus station. When we arrived, a lovely many were waiting for us to take to the Riverside Cottages.

After the overnight bus and the small van, it was a relief. Remember that this bus depot is also your departure point if you are heading south to Phuket or Krabi.

Coming from Phuket or Krabi is even more straightforward than from Bangkok. Minivans run daily from both towns direct to Khao Sok, taking roughly 3 to 3.5 hours from Phuket and around 2 to 2.5 hours from Krabi, for about 220-230 THB (roughly $7), similar to the Surat Thani route.

You can book these through 12Go Asia or via any travel agent in Phuket or Krabi town, and there are usually several departures a day, so it’s worth checking current times before you travel.
