How to Visit Ait Benhaddou: Get there by bus, taxi or driving

Most people do a quick stop on the way to the desert. We stayed overnight. Here’s why you should too. We cover the drive from Marrakech (the Tizi n’Tichka pass is epic), where to park for 10dh, and how to avoid the “fake guides” at the river crossing.

Visiting Ait Benhaddou was one of those Moroccan moments that felt both surreal and deeply grounded. Perched on a hilltop, this ancient ksar—frozen in time and plastered in red clay—holds a special place in our memories and our hearts.

We have some of our best photos from Morocco, and really feel the calm of that relaxing moment on the terrace. We’re here to share exactly how to visit Ait Benhaddou, and make it easy for you. If you are looking for information on how to get to Ait Benhaddou by car, bus, tour, or taxi, this is the right place.

London couple, 45+ countries, 300+ guides. We are full-time content creators, travelling as slowmads, spending quality time in places we love the most. We run this and several other blogs from the best places in the world. This guide is all about logistics and timing. We drove the winding N9 road, navigated the parking “guardians” (bargain hard!), and figured out the best walking route across the riverbed. We learned that the “main entrance” isn’t the only way in—and the side paths are quieter.

March 26, 2026 update reflects the road conditions on the N9 for 2026 (ongoing repairs), the price of parking (still 10-20dh), and the best bus options if you’re not driving. Non Less the tip to bring water—it gets hot in the clay city. No AI; all routes mapped.

The Best Ways to Reach Ait Benhaddou from Marrakech, Ouarzazate, and Beyond

Getting to Ait Benhaddou is easier said than done if you’re relying on public transport. Still, it’s manageable and totally worth the effort. From Marrakech, the bus and taxi options require a bit of patience and a readiness for unpredictability.

It’s a long way from the Red City to the edge of the desert, where the Ksar is located. Driving or booking a guided tour simplifies matters dramatically. Overall, it’s a good value for money, as it doesn’t cost excessively. Instead, staying in Ouarzazate is easier. The city is just 30 kilometres away—the trip feels much more laid-back with scenic roads and fewer hassles.

From Marrakech: Bus, Taxi, or Tour?

The bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (the closest big city to Ait Benhaddou) is busy and requires advanced planning. CTM and Supratours operate this route regularly, but seats aren’t guaranteed if you book at the last minute.

Friends from our hostel didn’t get the chance as it was fully booked on the day. Once in Ouarzazate, you’ll need to arrange separate transport to the ksar, either via a shared taxi or private car. We found that many travellers tried the public transport route with mixed success—some failing and ending up in shared taxis anyway.

The easiest and stress-free option is to book a guided Ait Benhaddou tour departing from Marrakech. Trust us, it’s worth the peace of mind. There are several reputable tours, including these ones we recommend:

From Ouarzazate: A Quick, Scenic Drive

Driving from Ouarzazate to Ait Benhaddou was our preferred way to visit—easy, flexible, and visually stunning. Road conditions are decent, but be aware of speed traps—Moroccan police take speed limits seriously here.

The 40-minute route winds through red canyons and dramatic Atlas mountain scenery. It was a highlight just driving through. We rented our car in Marrakech through Discover Car, with pickup at the airport. Check the best option for you.

If driving isn’t your thing, local half-day tours run from Ouarzazate for affordable prices (200-300 MAD per person). These offer great flexibility, allowing you to squeeze in other sights, such as the Atlas Studios. Here’s a convenient tour option from Ouarzazate that we’d recommend:

What’s the best option to get to Ait Benhaddou?

Public buses from Marrakech to Ouarzazate can be sold out quickly, and navigating the final leg to Ait Benhaddou by shared taxi is chaotic and, frankly, nerve-wracking if you’re not used to Moroccan road culture. Taxis jump prices aggressively.

Driving yourself is fantastic if you’re comfortable with Moroccan roads (which can get narrow, winding, and rough in places). If you plan to drive, avoid speeding and be aware of hidden speed traps. The drive itself is breathtaking and adds to the overall experience.

We rented a car in Marrakech through Discover Car, which offered the best price deal – check if it works for you.

If you don’t want the headache, the tours mentioned above will handle every detail for you. The one-way bus ticket from Marrakech to Ouarzazate costs around 90-120 MAD. Check the availability here.

The shared taxi from Ouarzazate to Ait Benhaddou is about 30-50 MAD. Taxis directly from Marrakech can be 700-1000 MAD—rarely worth it unless travelling in a group.

What to Do in Ait Benhaddou

Once you arrive, we assure you, it will capture your eyes. The Ancient Ksar is stunning, but we appreciate it more from a distance than from walking inside. The entrance fee is free, which we love (in Morocco, this is unusual!), although parking nearby usually costs around 10 MAD.

Cross the river over the main bridge and prepare to step back in time centuries. The narrow lanes, the rudimentary clay and straw walls, Berber carvings—you can feel the stories rubbing off on your skin.

Beware: the narrow and uneven paths mean the village isn’t wheelchair accessible, and comfy walking shoes are a must (Ale rocked Birkenstocks, which were fine for us).

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, this is the place where Daenerys Targaryen conquered and freed slaves—the series filmed several iconic scenes here, which you can spot with the help of a local guide. We loved visiting a little shop dedicated to all the movie scenes right inside the kasbah.

Our favourite moments in Ait Benhaddou

We have an entire guide on what to do in Ait Benhaddou. Read it through. This is just a few things you shouldn’t miss:

  • Hiking to the viewpoint: The climb to the top is steep but well worth it. It took us about 20 minutes and provided a panoramic view of the ksar and valley.
  • Discovering the hidden terrace at Riad Mouna: Off the beaten path, the lovely hosts welcomed us with mint tea (20 MAD). Here, we soaked up the views in solitude, no crowds in sight. It’s an overlooked gem compared to the popular vantage spots.
  • Trying (and quickly aborting) the river crossing: We braved the dry season river crossing but got chased by a pack of local stray dogs—a reminder that the ksar is a living village, not just a tourist backdrop.
  • Exploring the village shops and cafes: The many shops along the main road can feel tacky in parts, but we found plenty of authentic bites, such as delicious tagines, at Restaurant Zaytoune for around 60 MAD.

Stay or Day Trip? What We Think

Everyone talks about Ait Benhaddou as a day trip destination, usually from Marrakech or Ouarzazate. We visited it twice—once on a chilly afternoon and another time while passing through en route to the mountain villages.

Day trips do the job, especially if you book one of the guided tours (trust us on the hassle factor). But staying overnight, even just one night, totally changes the vibe.

The village is quiet after the tours leave, sunsets are beautiful and peaceful, and dinner at one of the few local places feels authentic and relaxed. Dar Mouna is our top pick for an overnight stay right by the ksar.

If you want comfort and more dining choices, Ouarzazate is a better base—it’s just a short drive away and has plenty of amenities.
