Athens is calling your name in 2025. I have had the pleasure of being invited by the Greek Tourism Board to enjoy the city for a long weekend stay. We have explored the ancient ruins, wandered the vibrant neighbourhoods, and dined on amazing Greek cuisine.
I can definitively say – Athens is absolutely worth a visit! From uncovering history at the Acropolis to enjoying the electric nightlife, we’ve gathered our 25 favourite reasons why you need to experience Athens soon.

It was fun to get around Athens at night. We were at the Electra Metropolis, right in the centre, and a few steps away, there were always buzzing bars and clubs prepared for partying.
When the sun goes down, Athens definitely comes alive! Head to trendy neighbourhoods like Gazi and Psirri after dark to bar and club hop. With buzzing rooftop venues, open-air cocktail bars, traditional Rembetika music joints, and more, you’re sure to have an electric night on the town!

See a show at the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus
Constructed in 161 AD, this ancient stone theatre sits in the shadows of the Acropolis, providing amazing acoustics.
It still hosts concerts and performances on its awe-inspiring stage with lit candles and the Parthenon as a backdrop. Catch a show here for an iconic Athens night.

Best time of year to visit Athens
With over 300 days of sunshine per year, Athens dazzles no matter the season! But we recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons (April-June, September-November) to avoid the peak summer heat and crowds. Enjoy pleasant weather and smaller lines at sites while hotel rates remain budget-friendly.
Also Athens in winter is gorgeous, and definitely you will skip the crowds. I have personally experienced the Greek Capital at Christmas and couldn’t believe my eyes, the atmosphere is incredible.
Getting to Athens
Most visitors fly into Athens International Airport and then take the metro or express bus to the city centre. Major carriers offering direct flights include Aegean Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Delta, Emirates, KLM, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and United.
The metro and bus run daily from the airport to Syntagma Square in about 45 minutes for only £8 ($11 | €10).
