We nearly skipped Nusa Lembongan. Here’s why that would’ve been a mistake.

Is Nusa Lembongan worth visiting over Penida? Ferry puke, mangrove flops, Cloudland sunsets. Nomad-tested, Bali-hoppers guide: why we stayed longer.

After spending 10 days enjoying the limestone paths, seaweed farms, and cliffside warungs of Nusa Lembongan, we realised something of the “Bali of 20 years ago” still exists—it just moved 40 minutes across the Badung Strait.

While most tourists rush to the “Instagram cliffs” of Nusa Penida, we found that Lembongan offers something far more valuable: a place where you can actually slow down. As slowmads, we value these calm and chill vibes more. However, with rising prices and shifting crowds in 2026, is it still the “pristine” escape it used to be?

Is Nusa Lembongan worth visiting? Yes. It remains our favourite island escape in Bali, but only if you value “vibe” over “sights.”

  • GO IF: You want a walkable/scooter-friendly island, world-class surf, better Wi-Fi for “slow-mads,” and a chilled nightlife that actually exists (unlike Penida).
  • SKIP IF: You are chasing the Kelingking “T-Rex” view or want high-end 5-star Seminyak luxury.
  • PRO TIP: Don’t just stay on Lembongan; the Yellow Bridge connects you to Nusa Ceningan, giving you two islands for the price of one.

We travelled all around, sometimes walking, others by scooter. Visited all the beaches and enjoyed beers and coffee at the best sunset points.

March 26, 2026 This update reflect the change of the roads, incredible new cafes opening, crazy beach bars with music and great food. We deep dive into Nusa Lembongan once again, exploring the trendy atmosphere in a unique authentic intimate experience we lived in first person. No AI; all road-tested.

What looks like exploring Nusa Lembongan in 2026

Getting here is still a 40-minute fast boat ride from Sanur, but the “off-the-beaten-path” label is fading. During our 10-day stay, we noticed that while the island is busier than on our previous visits, it still maintains an authentic soul that the mainland has lost to traffic.

If you are choosing between the chaos of Canggu or the vertical cliffs of Penida, Lembongan is the “Goldilocks” zone. Here is the raw, unfiltered truth about why we extended our stay and why you probably should too.

Seaweed is a booming market for locals, again. After having disappeared, as tourism was starting the build-up trend that almost got Bali to collapse, locals return to traditional way of farming.

It is noticeable when you land in Jungut Batu, which is the harbour of the speed boats from Bali, and the main beach area of the small island. Seeing the colourful patches in the water at sunrise is a reminder that this island hasn’t lost its soul to tourism yet.

Nusa Lembongan travel costs in 2026

As full-time travellers and content creators, our finances are strictly related to our spreadsheets. We make every cents count, and try to be as smart as possible when it comes to destinations. Talking about Nusa Lembongan without an eye on finances and how much costs to go there would be a mistake.

Spoiler alert, it is still financially viable for us as budget travellers in 2026, as it was in 2023 when we first visited. This is an update table, which takes into consideration the inflation costs:

ItemPrice (IDR)Price USD/EURNotes

Why it’s (Still) Worth It: The “Slow-mad” Perspective

For us, the decision to spend a few days on Nusa Lembongan wasn’t about ticking off sights; Nusa Penida fell short because of unreliable wifi connection. In 2026, the situation improved, with many places using Starlink even on Nusa Lembongan.

Overall, Nusa Lembongan helped us find our balance, so that’s why we actually extended our stay. It wasn’t planned, it just felt so good to be there. If you are a “Slow-mad” or a traveller who values depth over Instagram filters, this island is arguably the best value-for-money destination in Indonesia right now.
Here is why it remains worth the shaky boat ride in 2026:

Surf lessons in Nusa Lembongan are pretty affordable, and you'll be right in Mushroom bay

1. Wifi works, and venues are chill

In 2022, working from Lembongan was a gamble. In 2026, it’s much easier and actually fun.

Almost every major café along the Jungut Batu beach strip—spots like The Beach Shack (beautiful lounges by the sea and strong wifi), the deck cafe by Panorama viewpoint side, is just Santorini vibes. Also check out Radya Coffee, Ginger & Jamu or Ombak Zero Waste—now runs on stable fibre-optic or Starlink. Also, the Mushroom Bay strip stepped up. Lgood Bar and Grill is still the most active place to eat (mostly western food), with live music and themed nights. My favourite place to work is from Mushroom Espresso, a few steps away from the beach.

For the best coffee, go to Island vibes (click here for the map location), which offers a velvet latte and Bali roast for 35K. Wifi is stable here, and they also serve good smoothies.

We found the signal strongest at the cafes tucked behind the main road, where you get the same speed but half the noise of the beach clubs.

Do you want to explore Bali. Stack on cash to exchange at local places - Anything as US Dollars, Australian Dollars and Euro are taken

2. The “Two-Island” Bonus (Nusa Ceningan)

Lembongan is unique because it’s a “buy one, get one free” deal. By crossing the iconic Yellow Bridge, you are in Nusa Ceningan in under 60 seconds.

Why do we love it? Ceningan feels even more rugged and “old Bali.” You can spend your morning working in a cafe on Lembongan and your afternoon cliff-jumping at Blue Lagoon or watching the seaweed harvesters at Secret Beach. Beaches are very accessible. By the way, this is our guide to the best beaches in Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan Island.

Driving in Nusa Lembongan

3. You can walk around and is safe driving a motorbike

If you’ve ever tried to walk across a street in Canggu or Uluwatu, you know the “Bali exhaustion.” Instead, Lembongan is approachable even if you don’t feel safe driving. We rented a scooter, but to explore for a few days, for the rest of our trip, we walked around.

Once, to snap some photos, I did Nusa Lembongan from one side to another, from Mushroom Bay to the Yellow Bridge in 45 minutes, including a juice stop.

We loved the fact that we could actually walk between our hotel, the beach, and our favourite warung. Something that isn’t possible either in Bali or the neighbouring Penida.

If you want to drive, it’s good to know that not all roads are paved. Especially the side roads. The most difficult we found is to reach Cloudland Bar Lembongan, by Sandy Bay, one of the prettiest sunset spots. Prepare yourself for an uneven path, difficult after rain. Ale had to dismount.

4. Laid back atmosphere

It’s not a secret that some digital nomads decide to stay here or go to Lombok. We can’t blame them, as tourist Bali is getting more chaotic every year. Unlike the “see and be seen” culture of the mainland beach clubs, the nightlife here still revolves around the tide.

We loved that the island “shuts down” in a gentle way. People gather at the beach bars for the sunset, but by 10 PM, the sound of the ocean takes over. It’s a place that respects its locals and its environment—a rare find in a 2026 travel landscape dominated by over-tourism.

Slow-mad Insight: If you’re choosing between 3 days in Penida or 3 days in Lembongan, choose Lembongan. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve discovered a home, rather than just a photo op.

Pros and Cons of visiting Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is just a ferry away from Bali, but it has its pros and cons. If you are looking to find the same vibes, options in terms of food, nightlife and cafes, it’s not for you. Staying a few days in Nusa Lembongan has its pros and cons. We have tested the limits, and below is our entire overview:

✅ Pro: The Island Slow down at sunset

While Nusa Lembongan is active, more and more cafes, beach clubs and venues are opening up. After sunset, it slows down. There is a specific energy on this island that starts around 5:00 PM. Unlike the chaotic beach clubs of Seminyak, the sunset spots here (like Jungut Batu beach or the cliffs near Devil’s Tears) feel like a community event.

Often, we see the same faces, and after one or two days, we start to say hello to strangers because they look familiar to us.

You’ll find locals, surfers, and occasional travellers all sitting on the sand with a cold Bintang. Life goes slowly here. It’s unpretentious, soulful, and one of the few places in Bali that hasn’t been completely made Instagram-ready (yet!).

✅ Pro: Food is great

While in 2022 just a few establishments were opened, in 2026, the culinary scene is levelling up. You no longer have to choose between a basic warung or an overpriced hotel club.

We found a perfect balance between high-end spots like Suku Beach Club (great for a splurge) and local gems like Soka Warung for authentic flavours.

Check out our full guide on things to do in Nusa Lembongan for our top 5 restaurant picks.

✅ Pro: Less touristy than Nusa Penida

One of the most appealing aspects of visiting Nusa Lembongan is that you leave the crowds of Penida behind. Hundreds of tourists visit Nusa Penida every day, which can ruin your experience if you are looking for a remote and secluded atmosphere.

However, Nusa Lembongan is close enough to Nusa Penida for a day trip, but it does not experience the same level of tourism.

✅ Pro: Accommodation are affordable

We took the first accommodation because it looked good. Dinatah Guest House has nice rooms (not an actual bungalow, but concrete-made), with a pool. It is behind the main strip that leads to Mushroom Beach.

We found our comfort zone, between Warung Bombom, Mye bakery, Soka Warung and many other places around.

Just walking without taking the scooter. With a budget of $20 per day, you are covered in a nice guesthouse with a pool and the necessary amenities.

❌ Con: The “Day-Trip” Deluge

If you only visit Nusa Lembongan for a few hours, you might actually hate it.

The island gets pretty busy during the day, and you’ll dodge more golf carts than you can imagine. Between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM, the “Insta-famous” spots like Devil’s Tears and the Mangrove forest are swamped by boatloads of day-trippers from the mainland.

This is why we recommend staying at least 3 nights. Once the last fast boat leaves at 4:30 PM, the island breathes again, and you get those “pristine” views all to yourself.

❌ CON: The “Sanur Shuffle” (The Journey)

Let’s be honest: the journey to get here can be a mess. The short boat ride is actually one of the most dangerous. Recently we’ve seen one sinking because of bad weather.

Sanur’s new harbour is an improvement, but the “Sanur Shuffle”—lugging your bags across the pier and jumping onto a rocking boat—can be stressful if the swell is high. If you get seasick easily, the 40-minute crossing might feel like 4 hours.

Is Nusa Lembongan better than Nusa Penida

While they are only 15 minutes apart by boat, they are worlds apart in experience. These are the most important differences between the two:

FeatureNusa LembonganNusa Penida
The VibeChill, Surf, Slow-livingAdventure, Epic Views, Raw
Road QualityMostly Paved & NavigableNarrow, Bumpy, Often Chaotic
TopographyFlat & Easy to ScooterMassive Cliffs & Steep Hikes
Internet/Digital NomadStrong (Starlink/Fiber)Patchy & Unreliable
NightlifeBeach Bars & Live MusicVery Quiet / Resort-based

Which one should you pick?

  • Choose Nusa Lembongan if: You want a holiday where you can relax. It’s for the traveler who wants to park their scooter once and spend 3 days swimming, eating well, and watching sunsets. It is, in our opinion, the more “liveable” island.
  • Choose Nusa Penida if: You are chasing that one “hero shot” of Kelingking Beach and don’t mind spending 6 hours in a car or on a scooter to get it. It is for the “Sights,” whereas Lembongan is for the “Soul.”

How to plan your trip to Nusa Lembongan

If our “Vibe Check” has convinced you that Nusa Lembongan is worth the trip, you need to get the logistics right. In 2026, the island is easier to reach than ever, but it still requires a bit of “Slow-mad” strategy to avoid the crowds.

The Best Time to Visit (2026 Update)

Peak Season (July – August): Great weather, but the island feels “full.” Prices for scooters and hotels are at their highest.

The “Slow-mad” Sweet Spot (April to June & September to October): This is our favourite time. The humidity is lower, the water is crystal clear for snorkelling, and you can grab a front-row seat at sunset bars without a reservation.

Wet Season (November – March): Expect heavy afternoon tropical rain. It’s great for saving money, but the boat crossings can get very rough.

How to Get There: The Sanur Connection

Getting to the island starts at the Sanur Harbour on Bali’s east coast.

The fast boat takes about 30-45 minutes. We usually book with companies like Rocky or Glory.

The Pro-Tip: Don’t just show up at the harbour; we made this mistake and paid the “tourist tax” prices.

Checking online the night before and screenshot it, made us save some money, but not nearby booking online at least 24 hours before. We use 12Go Asia all around the continent, and never get disappointed.

The “Perfect” 3-Day Nusa Lembongan Itinerary

If you’ve decided the island is worth your time, don’t waste it. Most people make the mistake of trying to see everything in one afternoon. Instead, follow this “Slow-mad” approved 3-day loop to see the best of both Lembongan and Ceningan.

Day 1: The Blue Lagoon & Sunset Hanging

  • Morning: Arrive via fast boat at Jungut Batu. Rent your scooter (aim for 100k IDR) and drop your bags.
  • Afternoon: Cross the Yellow Bridge to Nusa Ceningan. Head straight to Blue Lagoon for that electric blue water view, then grab a smoothie bowl at one of the “Zip-line” cafes.
  • Evening: Head back to Lembongan for sunset at Mushroom Bay. It’s quieter than the main beach, and the water is perfect for a late swim.

Day 2: Mangroves & The Underwater World

  • Morning: Drive to the far north of the island for a Mangrove Forest boat tour. It’s silent, eerie, and beautiful.
  • Lunch: Eat at a local warung along the mangrove beach (prices are great here).
  • Afternoon: Join a snorkelling boat to Manta Point or Crystal Bay. Even in 2026, seeing the Mantas is a “bucket list” moment that makes the whole trip worth it.

Check out our guide to the best beaches in Nusa Lembongan to find the best entry points for snorkelling.

Day 3: Cliffs, Caviar, and Local Life

  • Morning: Visit Devil’s Tears before 9:00 AM. You’ll avoid the day-trip buses and likely have the misty blowholes to yourself.
  • Afternoon: Slow down. Find a cafe with a view of the seaweed farms and catch up on some work or reading. This is the “Lembongan magic” people miss.
  • Evening: Farewell dinner at Suku or 3 Monkeys to celebrate your last night on the island.

We loved Nusa Lembongan and will return.

So, is Nusa Lembongan worth visiting in 2026? Yes, that’s why if there is an occasion, we will return. We are actually right now in Lombok, rewriting this guide and planning the next move to Lembongan.

The island life is so inviting. If you, like us, want the infrastructure of a modern destination mixed with the grit and salt of an old Indonesian fishing village, you won’t find a better spot in Bali.

It is the perfect “middle ground” between the over-development of the mainland and the rugged exhaustion of Nusa Penida.

Our Advice: Don’t just come for the day. Stay for the week. Let the tide dictate your schedule, and you’ll realise why we keep coming back.
